I am not really interested in spending a lot of time in bars. What is there to do when you are not teaching? And, is there a way to connect with other ESL teachers or foreigners? It seems like it might get a little lonely. There is an ad placed by a recruiter here in Minnesota (US) for Korean teachers. In their ad they talk about being over there with other ESL teachers that they recruit. Although I am wary of going through a recruiter, having some connections beforehand sounds nice. But, most of the posts that I've read say not to work with a recruiter. If you don't work with a recruiter, is it hard to connect with other ESL teachers and foreigners. I don't know why I'm worried, I make friends very easily, but I want to have a an idea what to expect. Do most of you come home from teaching and get on this site to connect with other people or do you have people there to connect with? This question is not directed to you party animals , although I know that I would enjoy hanging out with you at the bars sometimes, just not several times a week.

Nobody forces you to drink. Do what you want. Take up a hobby. Join a gym. Teach on the side. Study the local language. Date. Read. Rent videos.

It all depends on the country you choose, and the specific location.

I would think learning the local language, getting to know your neighborhood (get a bike), and keeping a journal rate high on most people's lists. Sightseeing and other activities will vary with the location, as will getting to know others in the field.

This site is a good one for getting to know people. There are other sites. Use the PM function. Join a professional organization, too (TESOL, for example). Better yourself as a teacher by joining training programs.

Thanks for your response. I'm not anti-drinking, I just wanted to hear what else there is to do. I do appreciate the examples.
