Anyone else annoyed with inflation?
Walking into your local restaurant and seeing the menu's prices taped over with new, 3-5k more expensive ones.
Or, the best thing which has happened to some friends - going to a restaurant, ordering, eating, and then being told when you get the bill that "Everything's 10,000 more expensive."
Taxi fare back home seems to cost more too.
(Just blowing off steam...) |

It seems almost everyone is talking about inflation in Vietnam.
It's real.
We have to work longer to stay at the same level.
This is mostly because of rent increases and increasing prices on all things. Even my laundry service fee went up. I can afford it, but it is annoying.
Food, rent, and other basic services have increased in price.
The gov is trying to battle inflation, and has publicly aknowledged this.
If inflation continues, it could be an issue in the near future. |

Yes, it is certainly an issue, but what annoys me most is the way the locals pull out the "I" word to make themselves feel slightly better about ripping you off.
I even get the feeling that some Vietnamese think that inflation is a uniquely Vietnamese problem and that foreigners have only a very narrow understanding of it. It really is comical when a xe om doubles his price overnight and then blames inflation with a big grin on his face.
Also, I found it strange that inflation was particularly rampant in the weeks leading up to Tet. Anyone else? |

HaHa, they tried that on me in Medan, Sumatra!!! I REFUSED to pay more than what was on the menu. They finally called over the Westerner Owner and he explained, "We started getting charged more from the distubutor a few days ago, we just haven't updated our menus yet..."
I was like, "No, sorry. Thats your problem. Thank god it didnt go up 1000X as much, I guess you would just insist I pay, even though the price on the menu is lower."
He finally said, "OK, but thats your last beers at that price.."
Duh, Im not trying to pull a fast one on you, and now that you have informed me of the price, that is fine.... geez..... |

Prices are still going up on a lot of things.
Rent is the biggest hit. We have to pay rent to live. Some teachers are trying to shop around for cheaper places but it means living farther out of the city, and even then it's not that much cheaper. Often not worth moving.
All of us can control where we shop for food, what restaurants we eat in and where go for entertainment.
But HCMC is changing and I see the prices in the different markets and stores going up enough to remember.
This month, according to Than Nien News, the Y to Y (year to year) inflation is at 15% + percent.
The question is, how are teachers going to be doing in 2, 3, or five years?
