naturegirl321, I may be doing that in two years. I wanted to get certified as an ESL teacher.

My real question is how hard is it to get a job as a certified ESL teacher abroad? It seems that American schools abroad would mainly be out when it comes to needing ESL teachers but I could be wrong. I am curious about the job opportunities as a certified ESL teacher abroad.

JZ,
You joined this board 3 years ago. I'm frankly surprised that you have to ask such a question.

I'd be happy to tell you all about Japan if you're interested, but I think you already haunt that forum. You are in Taiwan right now, right? What is the teaching climate there?

And, what country(ies) are you interested in next?

[oh, and that would be "job prospects" not "prospectives".]

You should not be so surprised. I don't know of anyone on this board who works for an American school abroad. I would say that most teachers on here work at a cram school, eikawa, or hogwon or whatever it is called in your country. Or the others who work at universities.

As for Japan I have seen that some Japanese high schools pay better for certified teachers. I have seen advertisements for 330,000-350,000 Yen a month.

I would say that being a certified teacher would not help you much in Taiwan. I don't believe that the average high school in Taiwan would pay any more for a certified teacher. the only place that being a certified teacher would do any good is at the American or European School in Taipei.

Pretty easy if you have the quals and experience, try www.ibo.org , but it's a lot of work to work in a school. I don't just teach English, but Maths, Science, Social Studies and Art

My question is whether an ESL qualification limits you. Would it be better to get certified in another area, social studies, elementary education, etc.? When I am talking about which certification would be better I am talking about working for an IB school, International school, or American school.

Maybe, but at my school, they have people teahcing everything, I think you just have to be an English speaker. BUt that's not to say I'm not qualified, I got certs of eligibity in P3, ESL, and Spanish. I saw Primary is pretty broad, so you could teach lots there. Many schools need Science, HIstory and Maths teachers, but at my school, in Secondary, they're tuaght in Spanish. So you might be limited if you don't speak the language. IB schools can be international and American, they encompass everythign. In my humble opinion, the British schools are better Smile

Yes, maybe I should try to get certfied to teach in a primary school. The only question is whether I can get a job as a primary school teacher without certification in the US that will allow me to earn my certification. I know that there are many opporunities to get a job as a math teacher or ESL teacher without certification but I don't know about getting a job as an elementary teacher.

My understanding was that being certified/qualified was now the standard requirement for *any* teaching job in Taiwan (including TEFL).

Seems like you're having a terminology/jargon problem on this thread now; jargon varies between U.S./U.K. (and, I suppose, Australia/N.Z., where it may be closer to the U.K. terminology). Would be helpful if the English-speaking world would standardize, but I guess that's too much to hope for...
