It's just a form letter they provide, documenting your dates, and permitting you to exit the country while your FM3 is in process.

Yes. Been there, done that. Dang! What is that thing called?

Aha! Permiso de salida y regreso.

I think the fee is on the order of $200 MXN, maybe a little more.

If, on the other hand, you didn't need it for travel, just to prove your [pending] FM3 status, I think what you would get is called a constancia de
something or other, maybe the corresponding constancia de trmite.

The permiso is free; the fine for not getting one is 400 pesos - or at least it was when I paid the fine a couple of years ago...

Maybe my circumstances were different than Is650's; I paid the fee under Article 13, Fraction VI of the Ley Federal de Derechos and the current 2008 amount is $260 MXN.

I also have second hand experience that someone had to pay (the amount notamiss quotes) for that process, whether the fee for for the letter or the fee was for the tramite, I'm not sure.

BTW, anyone looking for a reference on the current (2008) fees for all the different trmites migratorios will find them in the document that you can download here: http://www.diputados.gob.mx/LeyesBiblio/ref/lfd.htm. Download one of the options under "Texto Vigente" and go to Chapter I, Articles 814.
