So I have been reading through the vast amounts of information located on this site and the forums. I have decided that I want to teach English temporarily in China for a year or so. To avoid hassles of getting certified and then finding employment I stumbled upon a forum post in which someone recommended the following: http://tefltemp.com/Guaranteed-TEFL-Jobs.htm. For some reason that link wont work but I copied it right from the URL bar. If that doesnt work here is the other link: http://tefl.teflinternational.com/guaranteed_job_china.asp I would be interested in doing the Special China 1 year program. I have a few other questions that I'm going to throw in this post as well. I didn't know if I should make separate posts for each issue.

My questions are: 1.) is this a reputable program to go through? There is guaranteed pay and housing if you look at the link that I posted above. From what I've read so far it seems you can take various routes to get employed. 2.) Would I get a similar experience compared to people who find a contract through an agency, web board, etc? 3.) I am a native born English speaker but of Asian Decent. Would there be any problems with that? Online I have seen some posts where some places may be a bit discriminatory or are looking for Caucasian looking people.4.) Would they cover the Visa for this program if its a 1 year program? I can't find anything on the link above which talks about Visas. I will look into it myself as well but just wanted to know if anyone has done this same program and is happy with it.

As a little bit of a background if that matters, I am 23 with a Bachelors in MIS. I just recently quit my job and am very interested in working overseas in China teaching English for a year or so. I have had experience working overseas in Bangkok through in internship with Bayer. I know theres a lot to read but any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated!

Each location would be different; meaning some good, some bad! You can find a place where you can just walk in and fit in but another location you could come up against: what are you doing here. The luck of the draw.

There are plenty of places where you can talk directly with where you are going to work and so get a better idea of what you are letting yourself into. It will also take you about six months to get some feel for a place and your students.

Don't pay for a job unless you want to be a doorman at a 5-star hotel in NYC.

I believe the initial $350 is for the 3 week training course.

The pay rate is okay provided the accommodation is alright. The charge for the course is also good if it is true which I doubt:

Cost in US$: $1,590 including accommodation

http://www.teflcertificationabroad.com/listingsp3.cfm/listing/22726

9,000.00 USD = 63,954.00 CNY
United States Dollars China Yuan Renminbi
1 USD = 7.10600 CNY 1 CNY = 0.140726 USD

Also find out the classroom hours as they do not state them at all!

This is another course but they charge more plus charge for accommodation too.

As some previously mentioned, check out www.chinatefl.com for university jobs that begin at the end of August. Some may offer a 1 semester deal; you could then decide if you really wanted to stay longer.

I'd say, start contacting the schools mid-April and persist until the end of June. If they really want you, you'll have the "offer" and paperwork before 6/1.

Nanjing is nice.

Get accommodation clear. Sharing sucks big time in any shape or form. Is the contract a 10 month contract or a twelve month contract. Ten month contracts leave you stranded for the Summer holidays without pay.

Lots of schools here set you up with a blackboard full stop. I haveworked like this for two years here. So if you are depending on having multi media to teach with then ask.

Of find out if you have to do a medical before you come.
