I'm just wondering here.
If "ghost" is an educator with the credentials that it says it has, why would it be seeking comments and critiques on its language learning from non-native speakers?
Would it learn Korean or Tagalog by practicing with anonymous Americans or Brits or Aussies (on the Internet, no less), the vast majority of whom have no more language experience than a few months to a few years?
No. It would contact a native speaker (in this case a native Indonesian speaker living in Korea) or a group of native speakers and continue its language learning that way.
And it would also apologize to all Koreans for saying that they aren't good/nice people. We're still waiting for that one. |

Please, don't avoid these issues.
At least "ghost" has written an Indonesian sentence that's not of the form saya + verb + complement. I guess he must have copied it from a phrasebook or dictionary. |

oh yes, these posts have "phrasebook" written all over them
ghost, please explain why it is you seem to find the need to include a "translation"(in bold???) at the bottom of your indo-babble...... it would seem to me that you are posting on here in indo for those that can already understand indo...granted, your indo has a bit of comic error in it, it would seem that your seemingly pointless banter is getting its message across to the intended audience without the needless translation |

Crikey - 5 pages. I think this is the hottest topic I've ever seen on the Indonesia board. |

I was referring only to its most recent post:
Coba, jangan mulai masalah yang sama lagi!
"ghost" has shown that its BI skills aren't developed enough to write such an expression on its own. Hence the comment about using a phrasebook or dictionary. |

escola???
What language is that? Korean-Tagalog-Canadian?
There are two significant aural differences between escola and the correct B.I. word. One wonders what the ghost's pronunciation skills really are. We've seen only its writing. |

Ghost,
Interesting to read about all your travels - Japan, Korea, Indonesia - since you left Taiwan.
I'm curious, do you regret leaving Taiwan and not learning Mandarin, especially since Chinese is such an important language to learn?
Do you prefer Korea to Taiwan?
Would Japan be better than either Korea or Taiwan?
Finally, how would Indonesia stack up against all of the above?
Any plans to move to Indonesia?
Nice going on your language learning in Indonesia! |

I did learn Mandarin during my time teaching in Taiwan (2005-2006) and attained Level 2 during my studies at Providence University, Taichung, Taiwan. I continue to study the language every chance I get, and despite what people think, speaking Mandarin is really quite easy compared with many languages, provided you pronounce the tones well enough for people to understand you. What is time consuming is learning Chinese characters, and that takes many years of persistent study, to attain a reasonable level of around 3000 memorized characters. For those who are not bothered, there is always pinyin, or 'bopa mofa' in Taiwan, for the latter.
Do you prefer Korea to Taiwan?
I prefer Korea to Taiwan. People claim that Taiwanese are much 'nicer' than Koreans, but I don't see a big difference. I find the environment in Korea much healthier than Taiwan. There are mountains and nature everywhere, and I can go jogging and cycle for miles on country roads in Korea. Something I could never do in Taiwan, which has high population density, and very high levels of pollution. Even in Seoul, there are small mountains to hike up, right in the middle of the city - unique in Asia, I think.
Korea is a breath of fresh air in comparison.
Would Japan be better than either Korea or Taiwan?
I have studied in Japan, at www.genkijacs.com in Fukuoka, and enyoyed my stay, but I found the Japanese rather cold and aloof unless you were connected to them in some way. This made practice of Japanese, outside of class, difficult. Also, Japan is more expensive, but not as expensive as some people claim, and the prices in Japan are not much higher than Korea. In Korea, most teachers save about $1000 u.s. per month on a typical salary of 2.2 million won, and in Japan most teachers save around $500 u.s. on a typical salary of around 250, 000 yen.
Finally, how would Indonesia stack up against all of the
above?
I loved living in Indonesia and studying at www.puribahasa.net in Yogyakarta, but there are some things which are not so nice in Indonesia, like pollution, and real danger when riding motorbikes and bicycles as your main form of transport. However, Indonesians, in general, are much more friendly and communicative compared with Japanese and Koreans. They are more open to foreigners, in general, except for the small percentage (less than 1%) of Islam fundamentalists who you will almost never see, in any case.
Any plans to move to Indonesia?
I plan to return to continue my studies at www.puribahasa.net when I get the chance.
Nice going on your language learning in Indonesia!
It is certainly an easier language to make headway in, than most others.

Thanks for taking the time to contrast the differences, based on your experiences, between Korea, Taiwan and Japan - and Indonesia.
Most people only ever teach in one country, while you've worked in several. |

The countries I have taught in so far:
Guatemala (1995) - Very enjoyable, but low pay.
Turkey (2003-2004) Nice country, but teaching there is not as enjoyable.
Dominican Republic (6 months in 2004) - Very enjoyable culture, but low pay. Very nice lifestyle and social life.
Taiwan (2005-2006) - Decent pay and conditions, but did not enjoy teaching in the High School there (lack of motivated students). Learning Chinese in Taiwan is cheaper than most places in China, paradoxically.
Korea (2007-2008) - One year as a Teacher Trainer for Korean Ministry of Education College. I enjoyed the good salary and benefits (2 months paid vacation a year), and even at other times of the year, you would basically just show up to your office, but there was no work, so it left you a lot of time to develop interests. Korean adults, though, in my experience, are not the most enjoyable people to teach. They are very difficult to satisfy.
Also: Canada (1998-2006). Taught ESL and EFL in Montreal, mainly to Francophones from regions of Quebec where little English is spoken.
Also taught for one year in Ontario, as French teacher for the Durham Catholic schools, in Whitby, Ontario. Not an enjoyable experience, as most Canadian students in the anglo provinces hate learning French.
Had to go back to school from 1999-2002 (McGill and Windsor University) to get my B.Ed. and become certified as an ESL and French teacher. But I prefer teaching overseas, as less stress compared with teaching in the regular schools in Canada.
Next target country for Teaching: Saudi Arabia.

assclown, he's already been to Indonesia! And if he's wasting your time, then go and find another thread where people will show you the appreciation you deserve for how important your time is. |
