|
Just got word today that I got accepted to teach 4 days a week at a school in Tokyo. Just had the interview yesterday and was VERY impressed with the people I talked to-seems like they really have their stuff together. It's going to be team teaching with another native speaker (class broken up into two smaller groups) which will help break me in a little as I don't have any highschool classroom experience.
All and all this whole Nova thing has worked out pretty well for me. I got a 4 month vacation, apparently the government is going to pay 80% of the three months salary we are owed (we didn't even work the last month because Nova was closed down) I'm getting about 500,000 yen from Hello Work and my new job kicks in just as the unemployment runs out.
Plus I've got about four or five privates who are former Nova students that I used to teach. So I think I managed to to alright compared to some of the more unfortunate situations out there.
Anyways, you can now refer to me as Teacher Hoser |

I can't believe the government would pay 80% of your salary. |

Well they haven't done it yet, so I won't believe anything until I see the money in my bank. |

Oh hello Mr High and Mighty Purveyor of Delusions of Grandeur His Majesty the Holy of Holies and Right Honourable King of Kings not to mention Lord of all that is Righteous and True and Sacred and Saviour of All Mankind Mr Hoser!
Good work lad, I knew all that reading up about Iran's Glorious Islamic Revolution would put you in good stead with the interviewers and they would realize that they had a bright young spark on their team if they played their cards right.
I salute you! |

Feisty, aren't we? I did work at Nova a few years ago, but as soon as I completed my contract I was out of that joint. I'm currently teaching ESOL at a high school in the USA. When I return to Japan, I'll be working at an elementary school that provides a better salary and benefits than Westgate. You can have the title Professor, I'll take the rest. |

Well I got an official receipt-looking thingy in the mail today with 570,000 yen printed on it. There was some writing on the back which probably says "This is what you would be getting if Nova had any money left to pay you mwhahahaha." Anyways I'll check my bank account on Monday and say "Show me the money!" |

Why not? It's what the unemployment insurance scheme is for. |

It is? Well I must be double dipping because I've been getting unemployment cheques AND now they're giving me a settlement for the Nova fiasco (I hope). |

I'm going to be Teacher!
My Certificate of Eligibility is en route from Japan to mi casa here in the USA. All I need to do is get the visa stamp in my passport and book a flight. The first week of April is when I'll be back in Japan. Teacher's pre-planning starts on April 4th.
I'll be working at a private elementary school (again) in the suburbs of Tokyo. This time around it looks like they're going to give me my own classroom (not the Language Lab) as well as the standard desk in the teachers' office. I won't be a homeroom teacher, but a regular semi-elective teacher (e.g. music, art, calligraphy). I say "semi-elective" because English is counted as an academic grade in their escalator system, but is an elective should the student transfer. The school has printed up business cards for me that say "sensei" on them. (Ok, so they are part of the batch that they made the last time I was there, but still.) There is an indoor (heated) pool, but I don't know what the policy is for teacher use. I have the brown sports jacket (no elbow patches), however the teachers there are more prone to wearing track suits. The school issues teachers an official one (it's pretty sharp actually - I still have it... I wonder if I can get them to give me another ), but others can be worn as well.
Looking forward to a great 2008!

Think you have it backwards. Eikaiwa teachers usually work from 1-9pm, while ALTs and most university teachers work during regular daytime hours (8-4, 9-5). |
