|
|
I wonder if anybody can tell me the bottom line in regards to my job opportunities in Dubai. And by opportunities, I mean not only teaching, but the media climate as well(television/radio).
I am teaching Engish in Tokyo, Japan at the moment. It has been one year with a pretty reputable language school. I have two college diplomas. One in media arts and one in film/television. I realize that this certainly doesn't make me professor Plum, but I am hoping my other experience can prove fruitful in Dubai. I have about 6 years experience working with a television station in Toronto, Canada(2 of which as a director). So the bottom line question I am asking is, "Should I go after a teaching gig, or the media direction "?
As well, are there any visa restrictions or hassles I can expect if I decide to move forward with this Dubai plan? What are basic requirements and will most companies sponsor me upon hiring?
I appreciate any attention you guys can offer.
Kanpai!

Have you thought of teaching Applied Media Studies? Not having a degree might be a problem but HCT can't get people to teach in this area so you might have a chance. |

Not to mention that Abu Dhabi, in their effort to become a culture hub in the Gulf ( the Louvre, arts exhibitions etc.) is opening a branch of the New York Film school there - could be a great opportunity but I am sure they will want higher profile staff for such a project.
Just apply as M. Scorcese or O. Stone and pad up the resume!

Hi,
As far as I am concerned, I highly encourage you to visit Al Jazeera web site & another possibility would be try HCT employment page regarding your major.
Overall, you have a great chance.
Hope this helps. |

Thank you for the response. I will check out the HCT employment pages and see what I can dig up. Can anybody tell me if there might be some preliminary paperwork I may want to organize in preparation for the visa process. Or is that something that is completely left to the potential employer?

Other than having a good CV all ready... originals and copies of your various degrees and certs at the ready... and some good references ready to confirm your experience... there isn't much else you can do until your employer tells you exactly what is required for them

I made it past the prescreen but _not_ past the committee screen for a media professor position with HCT even though I have over five years experience teaching at a large city university in the US, an MA and international experience teaching and studying. HCT must not be that desperate for people in the field I guess. I do have an interview for practically the same position with Zayed however... |

They have the oddest hiring record. You should see some of the weirdos they hire (me for example) and some amazing people they don't. I have a few friends who were turned down. Why? Who knows? |
Truer words were never spoken. I know so many excellent people who were rejected when they were short of teachers to start the year in August. (again!!)

I was disappointed not to get to the interview step but that's life... you never know what it may be and move one.
I have my fingers crossed for Zayed but we shall see... |
