Here at Australian College of Kuwait, we are forbidden from publishing unauthorized research for 5 years after leaving ACK. This is completely ridiculous! How can they possibly enforce such a rule? What are they afraid of? That someone might do some research into ACK and discover that its a screwed up mess? That the UAE reject who runs it is an incompetent thug? Does anyone else employed in Kuwait or other Gulf countries suffer from a similar restriction?

No need to whip up another storm in a teacup about the ACK, which is fairly characteristic of many private Gulf colleges- and indeed some public ones as well. I've heard of publishing bans at other institutes- not just in the Gulf. However it's hard to imagine anyone being able to enforce it. If you've completed some really 'special', original work, then you may be able to get away with publishing it.

I've never heard of such a thing, but since I never intended to do any research or publications, I didn't look into it. Perhaps this is just for the PhDs? I don't recall ever seeing anything in my contracts.

most posters on this board teach or have taught at the tertiary (college/university) level and want the respect, pay and working hours that other university instructors (adjunct instructor, professor, assistant professor or associate professor, or even teaching assistant) in other fields have
but
very few teflers i have known have the interest or ability to conduct academic research, publish it and present such to peers worldwide. all of the instructors i have mentioned in any other field go through this as part of their professional progress. publish or perish - is a phrase known in universities throughout the world

(MOD edit - Keep to the topic)

Yes, but as long as we don't get the pay nor the hours nor the respect (nor job security), there is really little reason for us to dedicate ourselves to something that gets us so little back in return.

I've done a thesis and with so little reward for so much work, I saw little reason to repeat the process. If research was my interest, I would have gone on for a PhD.

But... as the MODs say... back to the topic. Has anyone else encountered any rules in their contracts about research or publications?
