What does a nice apartment consist of? I ask because I feel like I may be paying more than I should be.
For $140, I have a small place in La Merced with a bedroom, bathroom, and small room in the front (like a kitchen, but with no way of cooking.)
Is this reasonable, or a bit high? |

Depends, what does that include include? Utlities, furniture? How many square metres? If it's huge and furnished, I'd say it's a good price, but if it's not, than you're paying way too much. Especially for La Merced, which isn't a big city. |

I think for la merced that sounds about right. I am assuming you are near Ave de Larco(sp?) and El Tios restaurante |

That price sounds about fair. Rentals have gone up in Trujillo. La Merced is a pretty good area if I remember correctly.
If you are quoting the price in U.S. dollars, the plummeting exchange rate is an added cost in itself.
In early 2006: 3.35ns=1 usd
In early 2007: 3.20ns=1 usd
early 2008, web reports peg the dollar @ 2.85ns=1 usd |

My motherinlaw who is leaving my house to return to Peru on the weekend lives in La Merced. It's nice, I've been there and stayed for a few weeks. In my opinion it's a great spot. Close to Larco, you can walk down the road to Wong (merpisa), or go to Super Win and get an artery clogging delicious sandwich. Walk 10 minutes and you're at UK Planet and then you can eat at Roky's and get plastic surgery from Dr. Placencia.
The only problem is some person with a damn rooster in the morning and i think the parks might not be as safe as they should. Also, there is this one place on a road i dont know the name of where you can get a dynamite ceviche and the best ceviche conchas negras I've eaten. If you walk 20 minutes you're at Fleming. |

The resteraunt with the wooden balcony on the road that splits off from Larco(near El cultural) has excellent ceviche. Relatively expensive though.
Beware Roky's. Some of its food won't meet the expectations of many a gringo's stomach. |

You speak the truth, but I just don't care. The heavely flavors of Peru are worth a trip to the WC. |

We've been offered a "mini-apartment" with bedroom, kitchen and bathroom in Huanchaco for $300 USD per month. That includes electricity, gas, cable TV and wireless Internet.
Does that sound reasonable, or should we look further? |

I would keep looking. Yes, it is beautiful on the beach, but the traffic, tourists, and general congestion of the area would get to me. Also, taxi rides into the city will be more expensive because you will automatically be mistaken for a tourist and your fare will reflect as such even though you bargain before you ride. I also don't like the idea of being so far from the center of Trujillo. However, I have heard from my family that there has been much development in the Huanchaco area like Wong and others. Weigh your options carefully. In my opinion you can get something nice in the city and take a taxi when you feel like you want to go to the beach. |

Does anybody know what exactly has built up around Huanchaco recently? My mother-in-law was a bit vague. I only know that there has been much construction and businesses that have moved in. |

Yes, Naturegirl, it does include furniture.
I had a look on some of the free classified sites and couldn't find anything furnished in Truijillo, regardless of the price.
Huanchaco started off at $250 USD, but they have since increased it to $300 USD after a nearly 20% drop in the value of the dollar.... |

YOu should take it then. Prices here in Lima are now about 500 for a place, so 300 sounds good. |
