Hi,
I'm thinking of applying for the ESL teacher position for the ModLang summer camp in Zaragoza. Has anyone either worked for them or heard of positive/negative experiences with them?
Thanx |

I recently (last week) applied fr that position and received an invite a day later to come up for an interview (from Valencia). Regretfully, they don't interview in Zaragosa until May - they DO interview in the UK well before that. Sounds like a decent firm. ISO cert and the like, but know not much else about it or the city - the city is hosting expo 2008.
It is the first and only posting I have been able to find for summer camp employment. I assume most places won't know how many positions they'll have avbl until the parents sign their kids up later in the Spring. Let us know what you find. We live and work in Valencia and are looking for opportunities . Good luck to you! |

It was great fun when I worked this camp a few years back. It was work hard play hard.
I think the main issues you need to consider are:
finding reasonably priced accommodation - this will be made even more difficult by the fact that the Expo 2008 will be running at the same time;
the heat - it doesn't get much hotter than Zaragoza in the Summer;
putting up with some fellow teachers who are just there for a holiday e.g. swimming instructors who turn out to be expert in the art of sun-bathing(although I've heard this has improved).
Having said all of that the kids were great, the weekends away in pueblos great and the owners not as bad as many I've worked for. |

Thanks everyone for your feedback. The temperatures won't be a problem as I love the heat and the school now arranges the accommodations for their teachers. So I've decided to go for it and I'll be there from June 21st until July 19th. Anyone else going to be there during that time? It would be nice to "know" each other a bit before we get there |

Hello,
I got most of the info about ModLang on their website and on their ad on www.tefl.com ! and their website. I also spoke to Judith on the phone a few times. I'll try to summarize what I know so far:
TEFL website:
http://gospain.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=gospain&cdn=travel&tm=4&f=21&tt=13&bt=0&bts=1&zu=http%3A//www.tefl.com/
ModLang website:
http://www.modlang.es/ click "public access" and then "Trabaja en Modlang" then "Summer Course Teachers"
They pay between 900-1200 Euro depending on experience. They arrange for housing for you. Rent is around 300 Euro for the month and it includes everything. The apartment is shared by several teachers. Also you pay 200 Euro deposit on the apartment, but it is returned to you upon completion of the contract. This amount is payed when you sign the contract.
ModLang arranges for us to be picked up in our apartments in/near the city center and take us to the school. We are at the school from 9 or 10 a.m. (I don't remember exactly what she said) until 4 or 5 pm. during that period we teach 5 one hour lessons. We do not work on weekends or nights!!! We get to choose between age groups and language skill we wish to focus on ( i.e. reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar). Lunch and snacks are provided by ModLang while we are at work. Classes size ranges between 10 and 15 students. Apparently classroom management is rarely an issue because these students are very motivated.
Finally, Judith added that once she has a better idea of what the level of the students will be, we will receive a syllabus so we can prepare a bit in advance.
I did my interview on the phone as I live in Canada ( and that is the only reason she allowed me to do it so early on in the year). Basically she asked about my credentials, experience teaching, experience preparing students for TOFEL exams, experience working with children and experience traveling. She also asked about my tolerance for hot hot weather, my age group preference and my language skill preference.
this will also be my first time teaching in this type of setting. It sounds like a good gig to me!
Please add to this info or correct it as you find out more about it!
In the meanwhile: Good Luck on your interview!
Ciao! |

This is so much help, thanks. I spoke to Judith by email, but she didnt give me much info.
Do you know are all of the positions only for four weeks? I'd be interested in going for 6 or 8.
My interview is April 19 so fingers crossed! |

I think the website reads that you can extend the contracts by one, two or more weeks. Let me know how the interview goes. Good Luck! |

Hi,
I have an interview in two weeks time for a teaching position in the Modlang summer camp. I'm really nervous about it as I have never had a proper TEFL job before. I have completed an introductory TEFL course (15 hrs) and have experince with teaching writing and reading skills to children while I was volunteering in Ghana. I hope that someone could answer a few questions for me; what kind of questions are usually asked in the interview and should I make out lesson plans? Also I have being finding it hard to get information about Modlang off the internet so to those of you who have had previous teaching jobs there could you please tell me some of the positive and negative parts of your experience. Are there many other young teachers in the school etc..?
I would be really greatful if anyone could help me out
Kind Regards
Christine

hi,
I have an interview next week with Modlang too and I have also found it hard to find information on the school. Does anyone know what we will be asked in the interview? I have come from the 120hour TEFL course with no teaching experience other than my TEFl so any comments would be appreciated |

I had an interview with them last week in Belfast and was very impressed by their presentation. I am expecting a yeah or nah by email early next week!
I just completed my CELTA in January and this would be my first ESL job!
Has anyone been offered a contract for summer 2010 yet?

UPDATE
I just completed a 4 week contract with ModLang yesterday, it was my first tefl job but I'd imagine there are many worse companies to work for.
My initial contract was for 2 weeks but they kindly extended it to 4 weeks.
The camp was new and a little short on facilities especially at the beginning but improved with time. The kids were really nice, well behaved and keen to learn (with 1 or 2 exceptions!) and I enjoyed the experience.
Next year, I'd imagine the facilities at camp will be much improved as both Judith and Esteban are very committed and hard working.
