yeah, I am just a jerk... I didn't appreciate the outside link with no commentary but it's actually pretty good.

Sorry to come off super abrasive. Thanks for all the feedback
Words do not do that site justice. If you've been here for a year and a half and haven't been to that site, then you've been missing out. For the most part it's all I use when I travel around.

I could mention the little quirky things I like, such as Bonsai village (on the north edge of Omiya Koen), the cool Cuban restaurant in Tsukiji, or the little English book shop next to the Subway restaurant in Ebisu... but would you really go to these small places on a week trip in Tokyo? Probably not. If you want to... you can find that information quite easily on japan-guide.com, or, heaven forbid, with a google search.

Don't forget that I was nice enough to URL link the website for you. Wink I'd like my cookie now.

DO head to Nikko if you have time. Kamakura is great, but there's nothing there that you haven't seen in Kyoto aside from a beach and a giant Buddha statue (which is cool, but Nikko is better IMO). If you have the time, do both.

Kawagoe is also an interesting place to spend a half day in, but it's upwards of an hour from the centre of Tokyo.

Kawagoe is good, and there is another English book store named the Blue Parrrot in Takadanobaba near the subway.

Don't feel bad, I haven't visited that site yet, though I have traveled plenty in Japan. A guide book and a Japanese wife will do that to you.

If you head over to Shimokitazawa, also check out Kichijoji (on the Inokashira line). It's an interesting place and has a really beautiful park. Also, check out Nakano for Nakano Broadway, supposedly the true birthplace of Tokyo otaku subculture, and possibly regaining its status as Akiba is being taken over by big businesses who want the nerds out. You can walk around Harajuku (check out Meiji Shrine if you have time), Omotesando, Aoyama, and Shibuya in a day. Maybe do that on a Sunday as that's when the kids dress up, if you find that interesting.

Avoid Tokyo Tower, it's overpriced and ugly as hell. If you want to see the city, go to the government building in Shinjuku where you can go to the top for free. On clear days you can see Fuji.

Totally agree. I went to the Tokyo Metro Gov office to apply for an ALT position recently and the guy who interviewed me told me about this. Totally surprised. It was a perfect day, perfect time, and I got some amazing pictures. There weren't many people there either, but it was a weekday.

X3. I never visited Tokyo Tower, and don't feel like I missed anything.

Ueno Zoo is one of the best I've been to, and I've been to a lot.

Do you mean in Japan? Ueno park is good for museums (art and history) and some open spaces in the cityscape, but the zoo Confused Shocked ???!

What's wrong with Ueno Zoo? I enjoyed it. It's way better than Beijing Zoo, though Bangkok Zoo knocks socks off it just for the crocodiles and the monster fish in the lake. I suppose it depends what you're into. I like zoos. I've been to the zoo in Nagano at least six times, even though its kind of lame.

Hi CM!

I too found Ueno zoo to be a very sad and depressing place... I couldn't wait to get out of there.

If you like zoos and if you ever get the chance, you should visit Taronga Zoo in Sydney. You'll love it... It's great!!

I agree with a-sushi. I have had some mixed experiences visiting zoos in Asia.

My wife enjoyed visited a Safari park near Sydney with about 20 koalas. Made her day!
