Hey guys,
Hope someone can give me some advice on this topic. I'm TEFL certified with a BA from Canada and have been teaching in Prague for the last 3 years.
I would like to work at a summer camp in the UK this summer but I'm having trouble obtaining the work permit. I've already had a telephone interview with the school and they are willing to hire me, however they said that they can't prove that they cannot find anyone within the UK for this position, therefore they can't justify hiring me - therefore no permit.
I don't have British ancestry and I'm 32 (so don't qualify for the working holiday permit). Does anyone know any way that I can obtain a permit? It'll just be for 6 weeks. I have a friend over there and we'd work together in the same school. Just 6 measly weeks... just 42 days... just a bunch of hours (I don't feel like doing the math).
If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks for your time,
Jason

Hmm, can't say this would work, but go over for a holiday and then try and pick up some work at the last minute. Some places get desperate (my first teaching job started 4 days after seeing an ad in my local paper) and at that stage they can justify your presence, although I've no idea how long it takes to get a permit: it might arrive by the end of the 6 weeks?Smile

You might even suggest this as an option the school could adopt.. but don't put anything in writing...

The attitude of most UK teachers will probably be 'you're welcome to the job'!Smile

You could get hired under the table in London if you want to risk it. Not really much of a risk though when you consider how many foreigners are working there illegally.

Incidentally, if you haven't already searched this forum have a look at this thread to get a flavour of the whole business:

I like the last minute approach better. While on holiday you are in the country and instantly available. once onboard it ias harder for a Dos to say 'go away' when they see you working weell ansd doing the job.
Keep the info to a minimum.
I am here,
Experienced,
Available,
Have tried and tested materials in bag can travel, see you tomorrow approach.

I once called a school (locally) to offer help and started next day.
As DoS.

There are always schools needing last minute gapfills who will bend the law to suit their needs.
If this is not the case then have a nicer holiday anyway and try and find a little private teaching along the way
