I just borrowed some DVDs from a friend and put one in my laptop. I got a nice bright picture on the screen, but it was difficult to hear the dialogue, even with the volume turned all the way up. So now I need to buy little speakers for my favorite plaything. Where's the best place in Mexico City to pick some up at a decent price, keeping in mind that I rely on public transportation to get around.

My roommate just told me there's a place called Plaza Meave and it's near the Bellas Artes Metro station where you can get the same speakers in Office Depot, etc. for much less $.

I just googled Plaza Meave and found out that it's a street market with a somewhat seedy reputation, though not quite as bad as Tepito. There were on-line testimonies from Mexicans who had been ripped off there, sold supposedly-new items that turned out to refurbished, and other problems. I think I'll go to a regular store where I don't need a bodyguard to protect me! Shopping there could be a fun adventure, though, for those of you who enjoy patronizing street vendors, and perhaps getting a deal!

There's a Radio Shack in Plaza Galerias...you know where that is I think. Or, there's a Woolworth down Insurgentes a bit. Or, any Sanborn's will stock small speakers, though they'd be pricier there.

If you have headphones for an i-pod or discman or such, then you could also use those. That is what I just finished doing to watch a movie.

That's a good idea dixie -- too bad I don't have any headphones on hand. But I could buy a pair when I go shopping at Radio Shack -- they're to be cheaper than speakers. Smile

Before you invest in speakers, make sure all your volume settings were turned up. Depending on your computer and your system, there may be different places to adjust your volume, and if one of them is turned all the way up, it doesn't help if another one is turned way down.

There's also the Steren chain which sells much the same kind of electronic equipment as Radio Shack � another option.

That's normal. Same way a set of headphones has one jack for input, small speakers will too.

About a year ago I got some great speakers for the same purpose, and to use with my laptop. I bought them from RadioShack at Galerias in Guadalajara. The brand is Edifier and they have lasted me ages and travelled with me around the world. They were not cheap but well worth it for the sound and quality. I tried Wallmart etc. all which had good options. The good thing about these ones is that they just plug into the headphone port of any device and work. I have no idea about technical things, so the simpler the better for me! If you take an iPod or something they let you test the sound etc. too.
