Teachers are leaving Mazoon in droves not because of "normal" staff turnover but because of management issues. As always there are those who try to make a difference and there are those who are just plain rude, inept and unprofessional. Mazoon has both ( as do most colleges out here) The staff who are leaving have been at the college for years, anywhere from 3 to 7 so its not a contract expiry thing nor have they been terminated.
Changing contract hours is NOT legal - just because others do it does not make it right. However the college realised this and have not changed the hours. However, they are planning to put the new extended hours in the new revised contracts for next year. Kind of a take it or leave it situation. Not nice but perfectly legal.
The question remains is it a good employment opportunity? |

Well, it has never been a great opportunity and has always had some management issues. I do not find it all that suspicious when long term staff leave as that is not uncommon. Most of us have a time limit on our tolerance of whatever issues exist at our employers (and EVERY job has negatives).
About the teaching hours thing... every employer that I worked for and most that I know of in the Gulf have adjusted hours and none have written new contracts. It may be illegal, but I have never heard of any teachers getting to oppose or stop any employer from making these changes.
As it has always been, Mazoon is for those who need a job, especially that first job in the Gulf, wish to work in Oman, prefer living in Muscat, and can tolerate the various issues. It is a women's college and I suspect that the students are lovely to teach for the most part. I think most people could manage a contract... and maybe even two. But one needs a lot of patience, and a high tolerance for 'issues' - and - a sense of humor.
