I'm not an immigration Lawyer, But there are many Europeans working in the U.S. Things have gotten a little difficult, but I see many people from many nationalities working in Miami. As a matter of fact, there is a fellow teacher that lives in China and flies to the U.S to work every other semester for a couple of months and then goes back to China. I don't know how she does it. It's like the old saying goes, "If there's a will, there's a way." One needs to think possitive. Very Happy

Rather than "If there's a will, there's a way", it's more like, "If there's a pressing need (in this case, for a British ESL teacher in Miami), there's a work visa for you". I advise the OP to contact the public schools in Miami to see if they are recruiting ESL teachers from abroad.

Now, that sounds like good advice. UK can also try the private charter schools or institutions. If it was me, I would fly down here, if I was able to get a tourist visa. If not, calling could also be productive. Give it the all college try.

Miami? I would not suggest it for someone wanting to save a large proportion of earnings.

Miami is expensive- really expensive. It is my hometown, and I love it. But I am in Saudi Arabia saving money.

Of course, I don't really want to live in the States, and even though Miami is decidedly different than the rest of the country, the pathologies of the U.S. cannot be avoided there.

By all means consider Miami for the experience and the joy of it, but I personally don't think it is a good place to save money.

Actually, due to the subprime fiasco it is the perfect time to be a renter in Miami. There are so many people desperate to rent their unused apartments that you can easily get cheap rent. Also, there are other options, such as, hostles and roomates. You can easily share an aprtment for $300 a month. It all depends on where you want to live. If you want to splurge and live in a high end part of the city, you are going to pay high rent. If you look for something in an area such as Kendall or NW Miami, you will get cheaper rent. I believe that if someone is single, they have the option of sacrificing a little, getting a little sun and paying off bills. It all depends on how you look at things in life. Their are some teachers that go to South American countries and do not make allot of money. You ask yourself, why are you there if you don't make allot of money? They are there to experince a different culture, make frinds and posibly learn another language. I was just proposing a unique experience to a fellow ESl Teacher. I believe that if you organize yourself, you can get that unique experince and make some money. It's just a thought? Cool

I think it would be difficult to get a job in Miami as a UK citizen. When dealing with the UK and the US there are certain ex-pat rules. The company I currently work for in West Palm Beach ,Fl which is about an hour north of Miami makes you provide accomadation and other expenses to that ex-pat by law, much like S Korea. All of the transfers at my company from the UK to our US offices got a nice deal; free lodging, free car, etc... It's not impossible but really hard. Same goes for US citizens trying to get into the UK, I have tried in the past; not as a teacher but as an accountant. It could be different for teachers though, Iduno. All I know is our ex-pats have a sweet deal, lots of $$$ shelled out for them.

If you get a job offer, make sure it INCLUDES accommodation, and that they will help you find something suitable. (I think this applies in most countries, especially Japan - no accommodation, no go !)

And...perhaps they have no bills and debts to pay back home, allowing them some financial freedom to make such a move in which money isn't so much of an issue. Or, they're defaulting on their payments. Embarassed

I, unfortunately, do not have such financial freedom, so I have come to Japan where I send a sizable chunk of my monthly earnings to the States to pay bills while also learning about a different culture and language.

HOORAY! It looks like I will pay off my credit card at the end of this month!

As english gibson would say, cheers and beers to paying off credit cards. Cool

Regards,
