|

Hi all, Im coming to BA the middle of May and planning to take a TEFL course and teach English.
Ideally I would like to take an intensive Spanish course and stay with a family for a month or two first before signing up for a TEFL - Ive been trying to learn at evening classes for a while but feel like Im getting nowhere!
However, taking into account I may not find a job straight away - from what Ive read it takes time to build up hours, you dont get paid for the first month and school holidays may scupper my attempts etc Im a bit concerned I dont have enough money to study first and then find a job.
Can anyone give me a realistic idea of how much money I will need to survive per month and also what I can expect to earn? Im happy to stay in a shared apartment. I dont need to eat out or go drinking every night, but on the other hand really dont want to have to sit in eating the Argentinean equivalent of baked beans on toast and miss out on experiencing BA and the rest of the country.
Can I just say, thanks to everyone posting on this sight it really is very helpful and informative. Hopefully Ill be able to return the favour when Im actually there and have experience of the country |

I rent a room in a house for 650 pesos a month.. I've been living with an Argentine family for a year and a half now, that's something you can do if you want to improve your Spanish and immerse yourself into the Agrentine culture.. It's a great experience..
But you can also share an appartment with other roommates for less than that, maybe 450-500 pesos a month, plus expenses for food, outings and transportation for the whole month, add maybe an extra 100 pesos..
Rents tend to be put in dollars for foreigners but you have to calculate evrything in pesos ($Arg), because you'll get paid in pesos..
Hope this helps,

Hi, thanks for this response.
That was much cheaper than i thought it would be from looking at craigs list and compartodepto... i guess you get the better deals when you are actually there and not looking at the internet!

That's true!! The rentals for foreign tourists are outrageously expensive.. And they put the prices in dollars because many people rent for 1 - 2 months so they figure it's cheap..
But when you live and work here it's a different story, and there are cheaper options..

I'll be arriving in Argentina soon, and I'm wondering about this housing issue. I've heard that you can't rent an apartment without getting a gaurantee from someone who owns property in the same city. Is there a way around this? I know absolutely no one in Argentina at the moment. |

Shared accomodation is the best solution.. You can rent a room in a house or appartment (for maybe around 500-600 PESOS a month), a lot of people (including myself) are doing that..
If you find a place that's quiet enough you can still get plenty of privacy..

Hi Angie,
Through which company will you be taking the TEFL course? What's the cost/length of time, and is there a guaranteed placement afterwards?
Thanks! |
