arioch, i didnt mean to imply that volunteer jobs werent real jobs. up above anda said:

i think that most people would agree that once a job earns a salary, its no longer volunteer. "paid volunteer work" sounds like a classic oxymoron. |

No, I agree, paid volunteer work sounds like an oxymoron.
I was saying that many of these jobs, advertising paid volunteer work as a teacher are scams.
I think what Patcol should try is Volunteer work where you get a stipend.
Like I said, for traditional "charity work" i think it is widely accepted that it is most effective to have many long time workers, thus pay is needed for them. Maybe paid charity workwould be a better term |

Well your written English is terrible and you don't have a Uni degree nor do you have teaching experience. So lets just say that you are limited to working where none of these things are required.
A Chinese boss can hire a local Chinese college / university graduates that has better writing skills than you have plus has teaching experience for under $3 US an hour as a casual at a language institute. Permanent the local teacher will get about $130 US a month at a language institute. The local person has to find there own accommodation and doesn't get paid for holidays or anything extra.
Now why should someone pay a high school student with poor English skills $500 plus a month and provide accommodation and pay for holidays and air travel etc.
My advice would be to study very hard and improve your English and learn what is required to be an English teacher before landing in China. You could easily find that you are faced with a class of complaining students and no job if you write bad grammar on a blackboard where you are employed here. On lower wages here you can easily get yourself into difficulties if you loose a job. |
Thanks Anda. Thats what i thought. I might try and improve my English writing a bit before i go, and thank you for pointing it out, although i already knew it wasnt good. But i think terrible is a bit harsh, maybe im just a bit sloppy here. Certainly not good enough to teach English, i know that!
But all i need is some money to make the ends meet, ill make most of it in Norway where i can actually get a decent job before i go so hopefully all the money i need is just for food, toiletries etc and not for rent as i will be living at my Boarding school.
It might not be the most comfortable way, but hey, it works, i get to stay in China and "perfect" my Chinese, and ill probably earn enough to make a decent living and in addition my family might be able to help me out with 1000RMB pr month.
Cheers!! |

| patcol, terrible written or spoken english hasnt proven to be a barrier for many here in china. i (and everyone else on here) know of teachers who, when they speak, can barely be understood by their students. as for your writing, its an internet forum, and people are known to be sloppy. again, skill at written or spoken english is not at the top of the list when schools are looking for esl teachers. |

Patcol always use Microsoft Word to check your grammar etc. Be self critical as you will probally want to do a university course latter on. Most of your marks at university are obtained through good writing and presentation. To achieve this, one normally has to rewrite an essay a number of times to get things to flow / read well. Practice makes perfect.
Below I have rewritten what you wrote above to give it better flow.
Best of luck, but you are half way there already with your determination.

Thanks Anda. Thats what I thought. I might try and improve my English writing a bit before I go, and thank you for pointing it out, although I already knew that it wasnt all that good. But I think terrible is being a bit harsh, maybe Im just being a bit sloppy posting here on Daves. Certainly not good enough to teach English, I already knew that!
But all I need is some extra money to make ends meet, Ill make the most of it while Im still in Norway where I can actually get a decently paid job before I leave. Hopefully all the money that Ill need when I get to China will be just for food, toiletries etc and not for rent as I will be living at the Boarding school where that is provided in the arrangement.
It might not be the most comfortable situation, but hey, it should work, Ill get to stay in China and "perfect" my Chinese and at the same time Ill probably earn enough to make a decent contribution to my living costs plus my family might be able to help me out with 1000RMB per month in addition.

Okay. Well, when you say it i remember seeing a video of a Chinese teacher, teaching a class and well, lets just say hes English skills where rather bad, haha.
So i guess i wil try out for some private tutoring, a demo class or somethin like that, just see if im good enough and who knows, my spoken English is much better, i assure you. But anyway, im not looking to earn but loads of money. Just enough to get by! And charity work seems like bit of a giving experience and something you could put on your resum(or whatever its called;P) |

You know Amanda, that was really helpful seeing how you rewrote it giving it a better flow, i certainly need some practice, especially when it comes to this particular point. |
