Thinking of buying a car from a friend off the american military base. Its in really great condition and has shaken already paid for 2 years, but it has the Y plate and of course, need to change it to a kanji plate. Has anyone ever done this or known someone who has? Also does the Yokohama vehicle Registration have an English assistance phone line or web page? Thanks! |

Unfortunately, I can't give you the details, but there was a JET ALT down here in Okinawa who tried to buy a car from a military person, thinking it would be oh so easy,... beign english speaking and all, but its not. I know this guy and he gave up and bought a different car eventually.

The having to re-shakken it is a killer... |

at Futamatagawa you can come with a Japanese person if you think you can't do it in Japanese yourself.
Or get a Japanese person to write out what you want in Japanese, and hand it over at the DMV there.
the written tests can be given in English but that is it as far as English goes.

have you been to this place before?
I have. Both of us live in Kanagawa and this is where the DMV is. |

Thanks for the info. My friend is selling the car and its dirt cheap b/c she has to go asap. But if it's going to cost an arm and a leg, then its not worth it. Anyways if anyone comes across a website r phone number in English for the Kanagawa DMV that would be great. I'd hate to drag a friend down there if I could avoid it. |
