Hi All

My husband has had a job offer in Bahrain. We plan on moving in 4 - 6 weeks.

I am a qualified English teacher with 3 years post TEFL experience and was wondering what salary / benefits can I expect in Bahrain:?:

Any help from someone who has Bahrain experience would be much appreciated Smile

Pax.

British Council ? You might need a WORK PERMIT. Private Tuition ?

From BD8 to BD 12 an hour.

Hi Scot

Thanks for your reply.

I'm assuming this is for private tuitions. Any idea what the salary range would be if I'm employed? Also, what benefits can I expect e.g. flights, accommodations, trasnportation etc

Thx

Between 8-12 is the average for part time work....at least it was when I was there. Private lessons can make a 15-20 but can be difficult to find. There is quite a lot of demand for IELTS prep so you might be lucky.

If hired locally you will probably not get flights or accommodation allowance.

Have a look at the local daily newspapers in English and check out the ads. Contact the British Council in Sheik Salman Highway. There is a constant need for IELTS Examiners but you need to be certificated to do that.

Also try the private universities. There are quite a few of them now and they mostly use locally-hired teachers.

You will get nothing like that, I fear. Do not even think of Al Hekma School. It is totally diabolical. I spent seven months there. My predecessor had run off, as many do, so I discovered. The Indian school has a good rep. and I knew an Australian woman who worked for some years in one of the other 'local' high schools. The pay wasn't fantastic and the hours were long but she enjoyed the work and was well-treated. If you run any names by me it might ring a bell.
The other place to avoid is NYIT. They offered me a job. I signed the contract, left my stuff with them, as they kindly invited me to do and they nicked my computer plus other bits of value and reneged on the contract, leaving me without an academic job in October! No way I could then get myself a contract for that year. Left a gap in my CV. Doesn't look good. I had dropped out of two other good possible university jobs (I have PhD)so it cost me a great deal of money! The owner of NYIT in Bahrain is a thoroughly obnoxious man, in fact, so perhaps it was a lucky break after all. He treated the staff horribly - shouting at and abusing them - I saw this myself but thought that, after all, I would have been lower down the pecking order than the Deans whom he abused in front of me. The Administrator there was an American - lovely man who tried to work it all out for me but I could tell he was being hampered at every turn. Dreadful woman called MC (MOD edit) helped steal my belongings either directly or by negligence and treated me as though I had done something wrong. Cost me a fortune in phone calls not to mention freighting, to get what wasn't stolen, that is.
Life in Bahrain is expensive but if your partner has a good job and accommodation you will be fine. People I knew who tried to find work when they got there had varying degrees of success and you will not get the fat overseas salaries, I think.
Good luck and hope it works out for you
