Foreigner English teachers, being thirsty and for the most part social creatures, gather at a few prime watering holes in each of the cities to which their ilk is drawn. Here they hunker down over chilled beverages -
griping, commiserating, planning grand campaigns and sharing delusions of nobility until they stagger, maudling or inspired, to their sparsely furnished garrets on the fringes of mainstream society.
Then they get up the next day and do it all over again.
I exaggerate of course, but now that I have your attention, perhaps, I would like to advance a simple query. I know that Ho ho ho Chi Minh city is far more of an international tourist destination than many other big Asian cities that are major draws for ESL teachers (I think in particular of Taipei), and perhaps for that reason the English teachers are dispersed among a wider genepool of night stalkers. But I suspect there are still a few joints where the usual suspects may be spied on any given funday.
If so, what are the names of those places please, and where are they? Bottoms up! |

If you come by a land rout you are almost 100% to be dropped of on De Tham. There are bars and restaurants aplenty there, mostly catering to the tourist crowd. It used to be that if you passed Bui Vien there were less tourists and more long termers, but now the tourists seem to have taken over that block too. Bui Vien has a bunch of bars that seem to change daily and then there is Do Quan Dawww.bluegeckosaigon.comu which has a couple of bars that have been there forever.
Other than De Tham there is an area off Hai Ba Trung that is about 2 minutes by Xe Om away. O'Brian's Factory is nice, but a little pricey and then you are walking distnace from the Blue Gecko www.bluegeckosaigon.com and the few bars that are left on Le Thanh Ton. |

Tam Tam is a really cool joint on Pham Lao, which is intersected by De Tham. People and workers are super cool. Right down in the western district, but still pretty cool |

There's also a new bar called T & R Tavern on Do Quang Dau street, one further than De Tham. They have good daily specials and play good music. |
