Hello. I am signed up for the ECC interview in Toronto for mid February. I was hoping to find a person or two who have taken part in the interview process in the past and would share their experience. What types of questions will the ECC interviewer ask. What sorts of questions are on the test the applicants are given (is it a lot like the reading comprehension tests in high school English classes?). Should a person prepare for the mock classroom teaching part of the interview or is it best just to go in and improvise. With the interview what is the key thing they are looking for. I imagine they are seeing if you are a personable and respectful individual who can speak clearly in front of a large group of people. Since there is a 2 weeks training period at the time of arrival in Japan I assume that the applicants are not going to be hired based on teaching ability but instead on their potential after the Japan-based lessons and how clearly they speak and outgoing they are.

I am quite excited about the opportunity of teaching in Japan and have been looking forward to this interview for quite some time now. I am paying quite a lot of money to travel across Canada for the interview and I want to make sure the impression I make is a good one. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

If ECC's interview is anything like their ECC Junior interview (which I took), it goes like this.

You get 40-60 minutes of company introduction.
Then, you are asked to take the written test for an hour. This is a 100-question test that is quite thorough in terms of English grammar, so know your parts of speech and other terms. You will be asked for definitions, changing sentences with mistakes, and matching grammatical terms with examples. Everyone takes this together, and during the test, you may be called away to do the 10-15 minute interview in front of the panel of referees. Expect standard questions, depending on what you wrote on your application and resume.

Then, you return to work on the demo lesson. Again, you will have to work with the other applicants to pool resources and devise a 5-minute presentation (each person separately, of course), based on what you collectively prepared. Unfortunately, the audience is not only composed of ECC staff, but your competition, who all are supposed to act like typical students.

You'll never learn the results of your test, only whether you've been accepted.
