Just one of those fun threads, with the aim of giving more information about living in Mexico. I've been here a long time now, and I think I have many of the answers - but there are a few things that still puzzle me.
I'll kick it off with a couple of my own:
1) Why do they put carrots in those cans of jalapeos? (I don't think the carrots affect the taste of the chiles and if people like jalapeo flavored carrots, why not launch that as a product?)
2) What are those big studded circles at the junctions in D.F.? (If they are speed restrictors, why not just put them in a line?)
Any others? |

Why do people forget how to drive once it starts to rain? And if there are always cops at the busy intersections, why does it matter if the power, and therefore the traffic lights, go out?
It took me over three hours to get home last night from work. I arrived home at 8.30pm.
I have also wondered about the carrots. I do not like carrots, and promptly throw them out before I store the jalapeos in a new container. [/u][/b] |

I wondered about that too. I have to imagine it's some kind of way to get people to stop blocking intersections. As for their shape, maybe someone figured out a circle is better at keeping people out.

It's just like back home at first snowfall...everyone either forgets how to drive in it or still has the summer tires on. It's not exactly like DF drivers know what they're doing in ideal driving conditions as it is anyway. |

Traffic build-up is not this bad back home (well, maybe in Toronto if the army hasnt shown up yet ). |

Ah, that's a complicated one.
Those small round green things that are served with everything are in fact lemons - Mexican style, not limes as most foreigners assume. There is also a large variety which is real lemon shaped but sold green, although goes yellow with time, but not as yellow as a real lemon.
You can also find something which is lemon shaped and yellow, but ask a Mexican what it is and they will tell you.....
.... a lime!!!!!!! |

Guy is constantly telling me that those little "limes" are in fact lemons, and I refuse to believe him. You are now making that impossible!!
I have seen lemons here (the big yellow ones we are use to), and they are limes. Thats the beauty of travel, and living abroad! |

Talk about an endless debate...lime, lemon, or some other thing. The Yucatecos have it right. Sopa de Lima is a favorite out there.
They use limes..big fat limes, not lemons. What we use in Canada for Coronas are small limes. What we use here for Coronas are small lemons. What we know of as lemons in Canada are limones real here, and not commonly used for anything.
In the end, your taste buds should be able to tell you the difference between the two. Lime is very distinct.

Why are there pairs of running shoes hanging from some of the telephone wires and cables in my city?
Is it just where I live? |

Why do jalapeno and serrano chiles turn from green to red if you leave them in the refrigerator long enough? Can you still eat them when they are red? |

That's not just a Mexico thing. I recall seeing shoes (single ones and pairs) hanging from telephone wires and cables in Philadelphia. In fact, a photographer friend of mine there did a whole photography project on this theme and even got a show out of it! |

Yes, like having to mop the floor every time I take a shower, super-wonderful! Oh, well, at least this way the bathroom floor does get mopped on a regular basis unlike the other ones in my apartment. |

Well...I have never noticed the difference in taste of the lemons here, than back home. However, any time I have had a bottle of gin from duty free it has always sadden me that I dont have lime and lemon to put in it! |
