Yes, the dictionary reflex is a problem. Students here spend so much time reading way above their level that they can't finish a sentence without using their dictionary several times. Perhaps they need to have it clearly explained to them that there are different strategies for reading something that is more or less at your level and for reading something that is way above your level.
I have to read some formal Japanese document, for example, I'm going to be making liberal use of my kanji and bilingual dictionaries. |
