yeah, I don't get it. people are really proud of their bread here, and I'm not real jazzed w/ any of it. So I just eat tortillas. Which are completely perfect.
From what I understand, when the conquistadores arrived, they refused to eat tortillas, and one of the first things they did was establish bakeries. And when the refugees arrived from the Spanish Civil War, a lot of them also started bakeries

. A great discussion topic in class is, "So what's so bad about Spain?"
Kids that haven't said a word suddenly 'find' the English to inform me!

That's funny! Last night my husband and I were pleasantly surprised to find fresh-baked bagels in the bakery at H-E-B! We've never seen them there before. We stocked up and bought several bags in case it's one of those things they only sell occasionally, like the fabulous focaccia breads they sometimes offer.

H-E-B is a big Texas-based chain, by the way. I guess they're mostly located up here in the north.

Why do so many of you shop at H-E-B? I am an old San Antonioan, who went to church with the B family (my grandson started kindergarten with Howard E. Butt IV).

However, cheap electric toasters were sold in Tapachula in year 2000, and surely I bought it for less than 150 pesos. When I brought it home and plugged it in, my houseboy was sure it would burn the toast, and would not pop up by itself! He also was sure I would burn the fried eggs on the Teflon pan without using a half inch of corn oil. Thailand, same story.

The Texans in Dallas were mortified when Mrs. Baird's bakery was bought by BIMBO. Very Happy

Why are there so many intersections in Monterrey with a traffic light AND a stop sign? If the light is green, should we treat the stop sign as if it's invisible? Do other Mexican cities also enjoy this form of competing traffic technologies?

bagels do exist! there is a small chain of restaurants called karma bagels (http://www.karmabagels.com.mx/) that has delicious ones. i also had a bagel in DF at this cafe...i can't remember what it was called...cafe ilia or something...but it's right on parque mexico and has real bagels! Smile

What makes bagels chewy is a two-step process: first the "raw" bagels are boiled in water, then they are baked, resulting in the wonderful texture all bagel mavens treasure.

Why are Tortas/Lonches the only sandwiches (other than subway) available?

I suppose the lack of large Jewish, Italian, and German populations in Mexico would contribute to the lack of good delis since those are the cultures (I would consider) most closely associated with the deli. But, i've noticed that Mexicans don't really seek out sandwiches.. maybe Subway, despite Bimbo's marketing campaign where they suggest, "Haz Sandwich".

Not that Tortas and Lonches aren't good... but is a cold deli sandwich just house food?
