Anybody know anything about this place? I've been offered a job there and trying to decide whether to accept or not.
Thanks. |

I wouldn't touch it as your base salery is 2,000 RMB a month plus 80 RMB a class for 12 to 20 classes per month. Your holidays would get paid at the base rate of 2,000 RMB as you are not working. The wage is terrible.
Also it is a college so your students won't be of a high level.

have to differ on that point. i'm also at a college (teacher's college) trying to get accredited as a university, but the level of english of the students in our department is actually quite good. much better than the other two places i've worked in china. |

I think it may be a different institution from the one you're thinking of, Anda. The salary is advertised as up to 6,000 for 16 hours and I've been told, unofficially, that my offer is expected to be over that. Thanks for the effort, though.
The full name is (I think) Beihai College of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
I wouldn't even think of a per hour salary.
I taught students who were mostly weak in English (despite being English majors) at Macau University for many years. It is a bonus, of course, if they have strong skills and one can teach at a higher level but I have developed strategies for helping weak classes. - obviously, one doesn't 'lecture' to them. I will be content with positive motivation and polite behaviour - both of which are (largely) lacking in the over-privileged rich kids I teach at present - though many of them have excellent English skills (far better, generally, than my students at Macau U). |

I checked out that site before, it is certainly confusing. That is not, though, the advert to which I responded. I am in communication with a different person altogether.??? Now awaiting a contract from HR so we shall see what that offers.
In fact, reading the site content, I did wonder if that advert was from 2005 and had not been updated.
I guess time will tell.
I would be really grateful for info on Beihai itself. Have, of course, checked on the net but that's not the same as info from someone who has experience of the area. |

Well, well, well. Anda was right!!!! 100%. So the other stuff was a windup, I guess.
I have let them know I couldn't accept the per hour deal. Also have a problem with the fare as it would only pay half of the total! They have made a good offer, now, on the salary but say they cant up the fare to 'roundtrip.' Pity. It sounds like a lovely place. |

They've come back with a good and fair offer. However, in reply to a q I'm told the campus is 10 miles from town. I dont think I fancy that. One can hardly pop out for a quick drink or a coffee in the evening at that distance - same problem I have with where I live now. 10K from town - result is that I feel isolated. Pity as it sounds like a nice place otherwise.
Any thoughts or suggestions, anyone? |
