I'm retiring.....finally! I've been working since I was 12 and it's time to set aside my chalk and calculator.

My wife is Chinese and thus the L (family visitation) visa is the appropriate one. Here's what I was told by the exit-entry folks in SH:

Go back to the US and apply for a tourist (L) visa at your nearest consulate. Then enter China and apply for a one-month family visa. When that nears expiry, apply for the one-year L visit visa.

Why the rigamarole? I'll return here on July 19 and my Z visa expires on Aug 30. Wouldn't it make more sense (Ha!) to have me enter under the Z visa and then apply for the one-year L?

After 9 years, China and her regs still boggle the mind!
