A group of three of us (me, my husband, my boyfriend) are intending to go to China after graduation. We're all going to be certified teachers (me: biology/English, husband: English/social sciences, boyfriend: mathematics) but in spite of a lot of experience in tutoring, etc. and previous work experience, we want to go to China before having jobs as "real teachers" here in the U.S..

What are our chances of being able to get jobs in the same school, or at least the same city? Is there any chance of getting into an international school? We'll have done student teaching and such, and a LOT of subject tutoring.

there shouldn't be any problems i guess if the schools like to get couples a threesome should be even better. think of all the money they would save by only having to pay for 1 apartment instead of 3. You guys are really openminded i would be rather upset if my wife had a boyfriend, but hey i'm me and you're not.

btw you may not want spead around the information about your situation around so freely one you are in china. it's really not anyone else's business and it's a little different and different is not liked too much in china.

should be no problem to get some international school interested. try to get into a real one. since you are tring to find a school with 3 vacancies or atleast a city with 3. shanghai, beijing, and i belive shenzhen have a fair amount of international schools. I would get cracking on searching for school sites and sending out CVs as real international schools and ones that want to be real ones try to get their hiring done.

Ha! I hope you mean your friend who is male rather than an extra live in lover you are hoping to bring along.

Anyway, International schools love married teaching couples. Even without experience I'd say your chances are good for landing a position, especially considering you guys are certified in multiple areas. However, most schools would most likely be interested in hiring you and your husband separately from your friend. The three's company thing might weird out some school directors. However, since your friend is a math teacher I'd say his chances are decent too on landing a job.

Yeah, I figured keeping fairly "closeted" about the situation would be a good idea once in China. We are already all living together and would intend to do the same there (we've also all worked together in the past, so working together shouldn't be too big a deal). Then again, I'm not much into public displays of affection anyhow, so unless they like to make bedroom checks, I doubt it'd be a big issue.

Of the cities with lots of international schools, which do you think offers the most "bang for your buck" in terms of cost of living vs. wages?

Not a troll, just didn't see a reason to leave possibly relevant info out (for instance, if he was just a friend, it might be more acceptable to work at 2 different schools an hour apart from each other, no big deal -- but we'd really prefer to live together).

We're starting our research early (we won't graduate for another couple of years, we're all non-traditional students in our mid-20s) but we really want to have a grasp on what's possible and what's not, since we're going to be starting Chinese lessons here at our college shortly. I also have a small stipend for traveling abroad, provided by my college as part of my scholarship package, and would like to have a "short list" of cities in mind to take a look around at some point in the next year or so.

I know many people will disagree with me ,but I would suggest EF would be a good place to start.They have franchise schools all over China.They provide accommodation and,in my experience,pay reasonably well.They have their own course books which may not be ideal,but are good enough.It really depends on the franchise owner rather than EF itself.Check out some old threads for the bad ones!

You may be looking for another job after awhile.

I suggest you try Hunan women's college in changsha, they would probably find your situation interesting and motivating.
