 My local rag reports that inflation reached 11.56% in Oman in March. 'Oman�s ruler, H E Sultan Qaboos bin Said, ordered an increase of up to 43 percent in state workers' wages.'
I'd appreciate if any information relating to the above announcement has filtered through to the current English faculty at SQU. Will you indeed receive a pay raise as a result of the Omani ruler's decree?

| Wow...if it were actually true that would be great news. SQU came in way under other comparable employers in the Gulf in terms of their offer. |

The key word here is "up to" which means that expat university teachers, who are at the top of the local scale, will likely not be getting 43%. That will go to the lowest paid individuals in the government. It will be interesting to see what amount the university teachers do get.
...even though it would take 43% to get the SQU salaries close to the pay in UAE for equivalent credentials.

| English teachers at SQU got a 5% cost of living raise in response to the royal decree you are referring to. |

Oh hurray!! Hey MM, that would be about... 10 OR a month for new teachers... a big US$25.

No real increase, just an small increase in the utilities which amounted to about 12OR per month. Cost of living in Oman has shot up since Gonu!! Food, petrol and housing is ridiculous and getting smaller for those working at the university - sometimes dark and depressing. On campus is better now, but it is well out of town and you have to go past the guardhouse on entry!! A definite compound. And beware that you don't insult an Omani. My friend went to court after telling an Omani that he was a bloody idiot. They do drive that way - somewhat crazy sometimes, but not quite as crazy as in the UAE.
Oman living is good, but you need to make your own entertainment in many ways, there a concerts and movie theatres and some restaurants, but if you are not a camping person or like diving or not into too much driving for miles for adventure, well that is about the limit of things, for entertainment. |

There has always been a guardhouse, but once they all recognized you and your car (with SQU sticker), they just waved. Any strangers had to sign in. How has it changed? Are they just more strict about stopping people?
It has never been a good idea in any Gulf country to lose one's temper and insult a local... common sense, I'd say.

This is true, I knew a colleague involved in a driving incident (don't we all) where the UAE local cut off my American collegue; out of frustration, he gave the local the finger.
After a short while a police cruiser caught up with the American and stopped him; questioned him about the incident. Apparently the UAE local followed the American and called a police buddy of his... ?
The American wiggled out of the situation by feigning ignorance and said he was just waving; his hand gesture had been misinterpreted...LOL people do need to keep their frustrations under control...the ole saying, "You're not in Kansas anymore" applies...freedom of expression back home just doesn't apply in the Gulf region! |
