I think an even bigger generalization should be made, at the risk of sounding obvious: most people who are from America/Ireland/England are there for these "same reasons". it most certainly is the cause of the stereotypes, and regarding the Brit stereotype, I would guess it's the result of just shear volume. There are, quite simply, much more English than there are Americans in Poland. Just geography alone causes this. An English guy comes to Poland for 50 pounds, an American's gotta cough up between $1200-$1400.

regarding Mexico, not quite. people going to Mexico are 23 years old or less. it's a spring break spot mainly because the drinking age is 18 vs. 21 in America, and you got a beach and tons of clubs. The 25-35 age group simply knows better than to go there.

At least Brits don't gib when it comes to a round.

haha, yet again. as i've said before, i can't say much about it because I simply don't hang out with any natives out here, but it's such a gross generalization. i guess if you're drinkin' with Biff one might be a bit tentative to buy a round, considering, for example, 4 pints of Guiness would be 80 PLN Wink

"Maths' is a normal British English term, and those of us Yanks who teach in Europe should be familiar with it and the other common terminology differences (trousers/pants).

I'm in my forties and enjoy going to Mexican resorts occasionally. However, I know better than to go at spring break.

And it's 'sheer' not 'shear.' Like a sheer cliff face...

Done a lot of reasearch in Poznan and my girlfriend, a 'Poznanianka' Smile is also on the case.

The Frolic Goats Hostel will give you a room for 100Zl/night, there's a prefab place near the train station for about 120Zl/ night , (turn right out of the train station road and 1st right again down a slope near the Post Dali beach) and the Hotel Wilda, which I thought had closed, dishes rooms out at 80Zl but it's a 25 walk from the Rynek. Hotelik, just off Niepodlegosci, has single rooms for 65Zl but is always fully booked. However, it does have a flat, which sleeps 4 for 160Zl a night on the top floor. So there you go. Most of the cheap places are fully booked due to trade fairs...I know as I stay in hotels there very often.

So, advice for the budget tourist/skinflint/frugal TEFLER: stay at the Hotel Wilda, eat in Ali Baba and drink in Coxy's or Dragon (both great pubs). Avoid the Rynek completely.

Why budget.

It is a holiday.

Enjoy spending your money in all the nicest places.

Crashdive when you run out of money and need to find the cheapo places and get the bus back home after selling the plane ticket It is an amazing country to be able to spend your time visiting all the coach and train stations around Warsaw at 2 am on the weekend alone with new trainers on.

Cheapest place to eat in the Centre averages about 10zl meal. Kebabs are cheaper, of course, but hardly a meal.

Hostels average 50zl/bed per night. Private rooms start at 70zl/night.

so with 3 meals a day (30zl)
plus a bunk (50zl)
we are now at 80zl/day (36.98 USD at 2.16 zl/1.00 USD)

which leaves 28 zl for the rest of the day
(50USD=108zl at that exchange rate)

Given that the average beer in a pub runs about 7zl (yes, some are 4.50-5zl - my point is, you have to look for them and often must speak Polish)

That leaves 3 beers for the day. Lockers at the train station are 4zl and 8zl, respectively. Trams and busses start at 2.50zl per trip, more if you change lines.

If you want more info, I'd try the Lonely Planet or other travel forums.

Just got back from a holiday in Poznan. Stayed at my girlfriend's and still spent 1000 quid in 2 weeks.
bought my son a toy in England for 15 quid, the same toy was 35 in Poland. Ate out a lot.......an cheap meal is about 25 Zl....ie 10 Dollars.....that's without a drink. An average pair of shoes or trainers cost about 300 Zl. Property prices are now on par with the UK. I.6 million Zl for a 3 bed terraced house in Grunwald...not a nice area....that's about 800,000 Dollars.
Poland is no longer cheap but the sevice and quality are still as bad as ever.Yes you can get a beer for 4.5, but you'll be drinking with high school kids. 1 shot of Sambuca is 8 quid...ie 16 U.S.....a t bone steak was 99Zl.....ie 50 Dollars. God forbid you order wine.
I don't do hostels.

Yes Poland is no longer a cheap destination, but here in Jelenia Gora it's still possible to find some bargains. For example a beer in the rynek still costs around 4 pln in a decent bar.Kebabs and pizzas are also available for under 10pln.
