You know...I almost hate to ask, because I'm not sure I'll understand the answer...

However - what's the latest with VOIP?
Does Skype work? Does anything else work? Can you use what you have (if you have it) to call landlines?

I'm planning to look for jobs once in in town - I'm assuming some kind of phone is de rigeur, but I won't be in a place of my own until - ? so cell?

I can't gush enough about the glory of Skype. I have a friend that just moved to Slovenia, and friends back in Chicago, and we can video conference call for free on Skype. You can also use it to call land lines, usually for pennies per minute, and you can buy a number where you're from that your friends and family can call that will ring your computer. I'm checking out the new WiFi phone technology, that theoretically will let you call other Skype users for free or land lines for cheap anywhere there's wireless internet available, in whatever country. So yeah. I like Skype.

That being said, I think that a Mexican cell phone is best for talking to other cell phones in Mexico.

I totally ditto sarliz. Skype=life to me. I'm living in the US right now while my husband works in Mexico, and Skype is the only way for me to maintain my sanity. It keeps me in touch with friends and family worldwide for free. I also find it often has the best international rates for certain countries on the Skype Out feature. (Although not always)

However, as great as Skype is, a cell phone is also essential.

Thanks both for your suggestions.

I've heard that there is some blockage of Skype within Mexico itself by the phone monopoly (tsk) - have you all found that Skype does still operate adequately FROM Mex? What is the Skype out feature?

Works fine here in Mexico City with Cablevision, as well as at work, which is heavily firewalled. Skype out lets you call regular phones for those folks who still haven't gotten a computer, and you are usually charged per minute for those calls....the rate depends and where you are calling to (not where you are calling from) and if it is a cell phone or landline. Calling a cell phone to Mexico from Skype is really expensive, but calling a landline to Mexico is ridiculously cheap, even cheaper than making a phone to phone call from within the country.

You should read the Skype web page, I'm sure almost all your questions can be answered there.

I have used Skype in D.F., all over the state of Chiapas, and in Cuernavaca; calling landlines and cellphones in the USA. I had no problems where ever I used it. Hotel, Friend's home, and ''piggy-backing'' off of random wifi that I'd pick up around town.

How about getting a Vonage line from an existing US line - any experiences with that out there?

I'll add my name to a growing list of Skype fans...considering what LD calls cost in Mexico, there's really no other choice short of carrier pigeons.

I just bought a wi-fi cell phone thingy on Amazon and will be picking it up and testing it out in a week or so at my mom's in Michigan (leaving tomorrow driving, wish me luck). I'll report back when I see how it works.

Voip is on the rise in Mexico. Megacable even has its own voip services and Skype users can buy a voip-in number in Mexico to use when they're not in country. All sorts of beautiful applications of voip.
