Hi guys
I am moving to HCMC in August, the other half is a Primary School Teacher here in the UK and has just secured a position at Renaissance.
I on the other hand want a new start, have a boring job in the UK and want a fresh start so have decided on taking the CELTA with ILA. I think
A few questions...
1. Is ILA the only place in HCMC to take the CELTA
2. Will I struggle to find work with the CELTA but NO DEGREE
3. What sort of salary could I expect, not an issue, just curious!
4. Any grammar books I should pick up before the course starts?
5. Whats District 7 like, Renaissance sort out a 2 bed apartment based here.
Cheers

wow thats really helpful but correct me if I am wrong but I thought forums were a place not only to search for information yourself but secondly to ask and hopefully receive friendly advice.
I have searched for this information but to frank have not found any specific to what I wanted to know. To be honest most of information is outdated. |

1. Is ILA the only place in HCMC to take the CELA
2. Will I struggle to find work with the CELTA but NO DEGREE

Not sure if ILA is the only place, but you may as well do it there. I hear that it is quite comprehensive.
You will not struggle to find work in HCMC in any case. If you have the CELTA however, it does give you more opportunities at more structured schools eg. Kinderworld, ILA. But try to remember schools in HCMC are pot luck and it is a more a matter of which one suits you best.
Salary - Come for the lifestyle not the cash, but you could expect to earn $1200 - $3000. I have always thought that HCMC was about time management. If you could manage your time well, you can earn reasonable money. That would mean working at 2 schools. If you a contracted to just one school expect to earn about $1600 - $2000.
Dont bring any books they will only weigh down your luggage. The book shops here are great and have an abundance of English grammar books as everybody seems to be studying English.
District 7 - Condos and cars. It is a nice place and reminds me a lot of Singapore more than a place in Saigon. It is really quite a different place to all other districts. Somepeople say that it is a souless place to live, but they are usually the people who can't afford to live there. I don't live there, but would like to, especially for cleaner environment.
I hope this helps. Good luck |

Surreycouple, that's awesome. I just booked my flight for August 11th. I've decided the only way to go is to just book my non-refundable flight out there and make things happen. I didn't want to spend 2 years talking about it, being too scared to make the move. Keep us posted on how your voyage goes.
I too will be attending ILA. I have not decided if I am going to take it at the end of August or September.
For all of the vets that can remember when they first arrived to Vietnam, could you please share with us the things you did to prepare for job hunting for school jobs and privates jobs? In retrospect, what would you have done differently and what tips do you have for us newbs? |

ajc - wow... wasnt expecting a reply today and yours was very helpful so hats off to you and thanks.
Salary is not an issue at all, as you say the move to Saigon is more about a change in lifestyle (not working 7am-9pm 6 days a week like I do in London) - we are very lucky in that the girlfriend gets accomodation paid for and a healthy tax free salary.
Love the fact you compared D7 to Singapore, my mum and dad were there for 3 years and we loved visiting the place.
Thanks again for taking the time out to respond.....
eddiek1syou.... Our flights are booked for the 4th August, cant wait - going to try and get on the CELTA at ILA on the 26th August. If you want to keep in touch, the email is [email protected]. Good luck fella! |

Looking forward to the move - our flights are booked, accomodation sorted so just the CELTA to get through.
I am 25 from London, UK and have no teaching experience. It would be good to keep in touch with those heading out for the CELTA - if anyone thinks thats a good idea, drop me an email - [email protected]. |
