I hope this isn't too far off the ESL topics to be an appropriate.......
My boyfriend an I are planning to move to Prague in August and we were wondering how difficult it will be to find an apartment that accepts pets (we have a small daschund). We'd like to get settled in first and then have the dog flown out to us. (We know we may have to leave him behind if it would be too difficult). Does anyone have any info on pet policies and how realistic this is? |

Dogs are usually welcome in Europe, to a far greater degree than in North America. You should probably tell your potential landlord/lady about the dog in advance, of course, but you probably won't encounter much resistance to the idea.
In terms of flight, if you can possibly arrange for the dog not to have to be transferred from one flight to another, you can feel much more confident that he/she will have a good trip.
For example, I usually fly my dog Calgary-Frankfurt direct, (and I load him myself both ends, though you could have family get him started and pick him up yourself, obviously). This means he is in the crate only about 12 hours. Be careful that your dog won't end up in a crate some horrible number of hours due to airport changes. Much better for you to travel to Frankfurt or wherever to pick him up than to have him connected all the way to Prague.
You will need to have the dog microchipped and you'll need the WHO international documents from your vet. They are common - just ask for it. You will need a Czech vet to issue an EU passport for him when he arrives. |

I'm planning to move to Prague with a cat and it doesn't seem too difficult. I had to get her a microchip (ask for the euro version) and will have to take her back to the vet within 2 weeks of our flight to get a certification that she's healthy. The people at Lufthansa have been very friendly about getting her a reservation to travel next to my feet on the plane. Also, we already signed a lease, and pets were okay with our landlord. |
