Suspected earnings would mean that they know or assume that you have been working somewhere. If you work part time here then some places will have you sign for what they pay you. So if they pay you without taxing you then you can be up for tax on earnings over your tax free earning limit.

To make this even more clear if say your main job paid you about 5,000 RMB then that is the end of your tax free allowable income. So any earning over roughly 5,000 RMB a month you need to pay taxes on.

And yes it comes back to you. You; like say back in Australia are responsible for making sure that you have paid your taxes. When you send your tax statement in each year you must declare all earnings and the tax department will tell you if you need to pay extra taxes.

And also it is up to you to know the law so there is no cop-out on it.

Firstly, I can verify that what Sinobear writes is perfectly accurate.

On the three occasions when I renewed a residence permit in Guangzhou, on two occasions, all passed without incident. The third time, however, I was asked to produce tax receipts from the previous employer. Was that problematic, however, as the previous employer, a government institution, had been collecting taxes and then deftly not forwarding them.

As for the airport checks, they have occurred with two colleagues of mine who possessed "F" visas.

Guangzhou is the wrong place to be this time of year for visa renewals, delicate issues, etc., etc. I do not know what the behind-the-scenes issues are, but they are there and life is not pleasant for many.

Thanks Sinobear.
Suspected earnings ,what does that mean?
Any idea how they determine that?
And what was the outcome for these three?
Cheers,
Andrew

It's a myth / lie. Rolling Eyes

Aside from the fact that there is not yet any link between the PSB visa system and the tax bureau's system ...

1. Since you cannot work on an F (or an L), if they knew you were working they'd have booted you out long before you were going to leave on your own.

2. Why wouldn't they also stop L visa holders? A heck of a lot of people work on an L and L visa holders are in the same visa system as F visa holders.

3. How do you expect they know one is working on an F or L and how much they earn? By a swipe of one's passport? Forget it.

Also Sinobear, are you claiming that your college trains the airport security staff who check your luggage and pat you down inthe international terminal or the Ministry of Public Security Frontier Border Police who man the immigration posts? Think long and carefully about this before you put your foot in your mouth.

Can. Right, tomorrow the world can end. Rolling Eyes

Now, in fact, GZ is much laxer on visas of all kinds than Beijing or Shanghai is.

First of all, I worked with Sinobear, and I know he can be a little pompous at times, but his information is usually dead on. I worked at the school in which he is foreign teacher coordinator. And he does go to bat for the ft in getting the correct documentation. He does keep himself up to date as far as rules and regs...as part of his job. And that school does indeed train airport security people.

As far as taxes being collected at the airport. Please tell my friend Michael, a ft returning to the land of OZ that taxes are not collected at the airport. He is 3000 yuan lighter because he was checked AT the Guangzhou airport.

Why not have a complete story instead of the old "a friend of a friend" scam?

Again, which personnel do they train? The airport people who scan your bags or the immigration people. Think carefully before you answer that.

My friend was Michael Taylor, a foreign teacher from Brisbane....who is now back in the land of Oz... He is not a friend of a friend. I know him.

The school trained airport security people... all positions. I dont why you are having such a hard time with that.

Any more accusations, think carefully before answering that.

Bzzt ... wrong answer.

Immigration is part of the Frontier and Border Inspection of the People's Armed Police. They are not trained at all in GZ. They come from the Armed Forces Police College (of which GZ has no such college) and are directly and exclusively under the control of the Ministry of Public Security.

Rather than say you are a liar, let's say that your friend who supposedly had to pay income tax in the GZ airport had a rather unique situation and you were not informed of the whole picture.

Calm down boys. I've passed through the GZ airport a few times and was never questioned.

Perhaps Michael appears a bit fishy?

Maybe, you didnt read what I wrote.

I dont remember saying who checked him.... I just know he was checked and had to dish out money. You said noone was being checked.

I said that the school trained students for airport security positions....which it does. I do not know if they go for further training. I did not say anything else.

So now...accuse me again
