be forewarned - it's a picture of a dead animal i took on hirai beach. it's a bit gross.
i was mostly curious since it seems to be some species of raccoon-like thing, but the head just doesn't seem big enough for a raccoon. some indigenous japanese badger-like thing maybe?

A badger.
They can also be witnessed outside of noodle shops showing off their huge concrete-scraping balls. |

In Japanese its called a 'tanuki'. They're pretty common, I think. I cornered a couple in a dark carpark once, and they didn't seem particularly concerned about my presence, though they made their escape while I dashed back to get my camera. Someone told me that seeing one is good luck! Not sure at that one, though... |

Looks like me, desu ne?
Although hang on a minute... I'm neither dead nor on a beach.
So, um, scratch that.

Cockle-warming stuff...
Aw shucks, guys...
It's true; I've been away from this board (and most others, actually) for some time. Slaving away on my Masters, I was.
(And twiddling with some other projects, truth be told! )
All done now. Yokatta na! Glad to be finished.
Nice to see you fellas are still hard at it, south of reality & markle!
I'll try not to be a stranger even though I am leaving Japan next month.
