You would very likely have to pay duty on two of them, if they found them. My cousin recently brought a desktop computer down. He declared it as being worth 90 dollars, and paid 140 pesos duty. Not sure what you'd be asked to pay though.

If they aren't declared on the customs form, and you get the random red light for inspection, you could easily lose two of them or, worse, be detained under suspicion of smuggling. You are allowed to bring in one laptop duty-free so if you must bring 3 then definitely declare them to be on the safe side. A bunch of sailors aboard an Argentinian ship docked in our port got in deep trouble for smuggling laptops and selling them locally. (More than one laptop says you plan to sell them in Mexico and these rules are designed to protect the local economy). Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide and have a safe trip.

Rain = bad!
Do people really keep their laptops unplugged for every lightning storm the entire rainy season? |

We have ongoing major storms on the coast during hurricane season, so we use surge protectors on everything, not just computers. We also use a UPS, something we consider a necessity.

In some areas of Mexico you can have major voltage spikes and drops. At my old school we had a couple of teachers who ended up with fried laptops due to using them without quality surge protectors (ie. not just a power bar with a pop-out breaker).

Just looked at my power bar - it says SurgeMaster - one more thing to find a place for in my duffle bag, I suppose.
