How's this school? swallow.cz ? They say they pay between 20 and 28K, which seems decent, right? |

The pay sounds decent. You'll want to pin down net pay in hand, though. And you'd need to be as close to the top of that scale as possible. 20,000 gross would be very tight in terms of net quality of living.
What city is swallow in?
If they are recruiting from abroad, that's often a warning sign that local teachers don't want to work there, probably for some good reasons.
There are always exceptions - if they are seeking someone with specialist qualifications or are located in a remote region, for example. |

I don't really know anything about them, which might be a good thing. Pay sounds decent, check the bottom line though. |

All I know about them is a friend of mine studied there for one year many years ago. Precious little. 28000 kc MIGHT be about 16000 supergross which will be fine in Liberec. If you get a Z list and tourists insurance, then the net will be significantly more than if you are hired as an employee. |

Hello naturegirl321.
A business license is preferable if you plan to live and work in the CZ longer than a year. If you just plan to be around for a couple of semesters or just 1 whole teaching year then it doesn't really make that much sense in spending the money and time on getting the Z list and a work permit+visa will suffice instead.
The advantage of the Z list is that it enables you to operate as a freelance business person and you can invoice businesses directly instead of going through the middle person (the language school).
It is a bit of a pain to get and does require investment but if your plan is to stay long term then this is a highly recommended route to take as it increases your financial and employment options and independence.
A local visa assistance rep wrote a bit about this on our forum pages:

Both the work permit/visa and Z List/Visa process can seem unbearably complicated (especially if you don't know any Czech). There are compaines in Prague which assist with this for a cost. I am sure they all do a great job but it is an additional cost for you and just finding a bi-lingual local who is happy to help you in exchange for English lessons or a few meals/beers in a restaurant will save you a heap of money.
Still, most schools now assist with the work permit/visa process BUT are often unhelpful in assisting with the Z List process.
Hezky den!/Lovely day!

Frankly, you're more likely to need to get professional assistance, because unless you're REALLY good friends with a local Czech, few Czechs will be willing to give up a day's work to line up at 3am to battle the lines (and hostile Eastern Europeans from ex-Soviet countries) outside the Zizkov Foreign Police station!!
You'll need the Czech friend/professional to help you as the FP don't speak English. |

The FP are actually getting a bit nicer to the Americans/Canadians and other native English speakers. However, it's true that expect to arrive there at around 2-3 AM and wait for about 12 hours before you are done. Please note that this is a 5 hour wait outside sometimes in the cold/rain (check the weather on the day you decide to go) I just got my Z list renewed and it rained on me for about 5 hours. Nothing beats the horribleness of the experience. Anyway, it's one god awful day and then it's over.
Also be aware that YOU WILL HAVE TO GO with someone. You're waiting on a line, if you leave, you will lose your space. So it's crucial to have someone with you for bathroom breaks and stuff like that.
Also there is still quite a lot of pushing and shoving and it's nice to have that backup and someone to talk to. |
