I apologize if this topic has been covered already. I'm having trouble deciding whether I want to live in Mexico City or Guadalajara...I have heard great things about both cities, although air pollution seems to be much worse in Mexico City?! I have an apartment lined up in Guadalajara if I choose to move there, but my largest concern (don't laugh) is whether or not I will find decent entertainment options in Guadalajara since it is smaller. To be more specific, I enjoy going out dancing, going to see live bands, and gong to the cinema. As far as music goes, I'm interested in 60s soul, 70s punk, glam rock, post punk, brit pop, sometimes indie rock, etc. So I wonder if I will have trouble finding venues in Guadalajara where I can dance to/watch bands play music that I like. In terms of film, I like to have a range of options including foreign and arthouse films. Any input, as well as links to alternative music resources, would be much appreciated. Just don't poke too much fun at me. Smile

Guadalajara is not Mexico City, but from time to time they have good gigs down there.

There's a Hard Rock Cafe:

This is a gothic one:

There's also a hippie market

This is an art cinema

This websited is mostly devoted to rock gigs, some of them in Guadalajara

Just one piece of advice, if you move to Guadalajara stay somewhere close to the historical district. Most of the alternative stuff happens in that area.

There is a really good district in Guadalajara called Calle 2 or (2nd street in english). There are numerous bars and clubs there. There are numerous subcultures and scenes in Guadalajara. You won't be disappointed in either of your choices. Mexico City probably has more but there are other things about Mexico City that might turn you off. The one really good thing about Mexico City is the ability to go ANYWHERE on foot by taking buses or the metro. The busses in Guadalajara are really confusing and the metro does only the basic north south east west thing.

Please clarify.

I believe you are the only human - foreign or Mexican - that I have ever heard praise Toluca. What do you mean by "nicest"?

You can always find an apartment in a nice area within Mexico City that makes all sorts of venues accessible by public transportation without having to pay the price of pollution (the quality of the air near the Zcalo is definitely not the same as in Coyoacn or Colonia Del Valle). No need to live in another city and commute to have fun, especially if you're more into nightlife, as I gather from your post. There is always something going on in Mexico City, I don't know if that would apply to Guadalajara. Then again, I'm speaking from the bottom of my chilanga heart. Wink
