I'm shipping off next week to teach for AEON in Kyoto. ANY advice about AEON, Kyoto, Japan in general or anything else would be greatly appreciated! |

Also, do you know where specifically in Kyoto? Is it actually inside... or are you teaching in one of the surrounding areas? |

I'm in Kitaoji. I realize now that this post was a little too vague. I was specifically looking for info about Kyoto and the Kansai area, so I suppose the title of my post is a bit misleading.
I guess I was also just looking for anything that anyone could tell me about something the were taken off guard by, and would done a little differently in retrospect. Again, sorry if this is too broad. But I though it wouldn't hurt to throw it out there.
Thanks |

Well if you know standard Japanese, but you've never heard kansai dialect... I guess that could be a bit surprising, but it's really easy to get used to.
Kawaramachi sanjo and the surrounding areas (teramachi, etc) are popular for younger people. It's like the standard place where everyone goes at night.
It's popular for couples to sit on the banks of the Kamogawa in that area too... usually with all couples having an equal distance between them... kinda funny the first time you see it.
Kyoto is really really easy to get used to. Trains are mainly in southern/western Kyoto, so you'll probably use buses to get around, but they're quite easy to get used to. Also, bikes are very popular, so you may want to find a cheap one when you get there.
That's all I can think of really. |
