In answer to your question, NO there is nothing to do in Nakano, and it is definitely a city ONLY in name.
Did I say nothing??
Yes I mean not a thing.
It has no visible signs of life most of the time. Seriously.
If you do not like snow, then I would not go there.
The town probably gets more snow than any other place in northern Nagano that is not in the mountains, except for Iiyama, which really is in the mountains.
Although I do not live there, I have been there on business several times, and quite frankly it is dead.
Did I say dead?
Yes, I meant D E A D.
Of course, Nagano City is no hotbed of activity itself, and honestly the people are all very subdued and quite stoic (sometimes even to the point of appearing unfriendly) though I am sure they are not.
Anyway, after too many years of living here, I am heading back to the real city. This place will wear you down after a while.
If you want a vacation from the real world, Nakano is your destination! |

talking about the "Real Japan" .... that would be .... Meiji era? or Taisho? or Showa? or .... 2008?
Concerning the OP's question: it all depends on the town/city itself. Some towns/cities are just not interesting and it would be difficult to get into anything. Some small towns/cities probably don't take kindly to foreigners japanese or non-Japanese (nothing I know in particular, just saying it's a possibility just like everywhere else).
Then there are some small towns/cities that are vibrant and they have lots of events planned etc etc and they love to show visitors to their city how things are done there. how they make their mochi, how they make their noodles, how they do their farming, their sightseeing spots etc etc .
It really depends on the city and it also depends on the people and how their present has been shaped by their past. |
