I'm pretty sure I've seen it at an import shop here but could be wrong. As for all the food stuff I'm with GIR. Leave it at home. After a couple months without it you don't really miss it. Anyhow what's the point of coming overseas if you bring home with you. As for diet stuff well I lost 10kgs just eating local food. Photo's souvieners Etc are really a good idea too.

Apsara, the Unilever, Colgate Palmolive conditioner is exactly the same. Americans have different hair (from thicker skulls maybe?) Rolling Eyes

been here some 8 years now and find that I still cannot live without the following, which are not available here in hiroshima:
wishbone salad dressing
pop tarts
peppermint patties
twix
cinnamon gum
excedrin and other cold/flu medicines
multi-vitamins (available here but far too pricey)
macaroni and cheese

Flour tortillas-they are 500 yen per pack and of poor quality. You can bring 3-5 from the US with that same price. Pinto beans bag to make your own homemade boiled beans.

well...i'm really not interested in arguing about hair conditioner, but i do have a friend who is a hair stylist here and the shampoo and rinse here are different from what i've bought in other parts of asia and the us.
the japanese use different stuff on their hair.....good for you if you find no difference, but i certainly do and know others who feel the same.
also, i'm a bit of a snob about my hair so i like good products and the stuff on the shelf here doesn't do it for me......but now that i'm jobless......hmmmmm!

I'm not a so-called "hair snob" but I do like to take care of my hair. I have used Japanese products and they have been pretty good. A lot of "American" and "European" products weigh down my hair and make it washed out.

I would suggest trying it out and seeing what it does with your hair before completely writing it off, but of course, you folks already know that.

When I came to Japan all my dormmates' hair fell out (guys and girls). It was a huge problem and then *poof* it was suddenly okay again.

The number one thing I missed was stick/roll deodorant--it was hard to find. I hate spray stuff because it stings when I put it on, and makes me sneeze.

I also missed going to the gas station and being able to get snacks and drinks, but that's something you can't really control. Smile

Erm...maybe not for my hair. I have different needs that most "European" and "American" Rolling Eyes conditioners/shampoos offer me. From what I've heard from my buddies, I don't think that it'll be any different in Japan...

Shocked I need to change my packing list, then. Have you had any problems with things like Birth Control Pills?

You might want to check out Foreign Buyers' Club. http://www.fbcusa.com
They offer many of the items which have been listed so far.
Another option is Costco. http://www.costco.co.jp/eng/whs_861.htm Keep in mind the product selection is rather limited and is often sold in bulk. If you don't want to Join Costco, you might try The Flying Pig. http://www.theflyingpig.com The Flying Pig gives you the opportunity to order many of the items found at Costco (at a slightly higher price) and have them delivered to you.

I have not had to get birth control pills here, but I'm sure they are available and easy to get. Of course, you will have to pay for a visit to the doc. If I were you I'd bring some....maybe a 6 month supply.
Good hair products are available at salons and Tokyu Hands in Tokyo has a good selection.

Again, the women on here bashing me for being American and having a 'thick skull', are missing my point.
Many people who are not asian have different hair than the Japanese. My friend told me that Japanese hair is 12 times more coarse than a typical caucasian.
Also, the hair dye they sell at the stores here is for the Japanese market and contains bleach or ammonia, or peroxide or something like that and it will FRY your hair.
You can also buy Japanese tampons, but they are no good in my opinion, and definitely not the same as ob or other brands I've used.
Anyway....good luck with your packing!!

Actually, getting BCP was a bit of a hassle. I went to go see a doc and he really didn't want to give it. He explained that in recent years the Japanese gov't has been putting pressure on docs to decrease their prescriptions they give for it, so that the Japanese population can rise again. Haha...I wanted to laugh just thinking of all the connotations and unwanted births that would lead to. Anyways, I was really pushy and eventually he gave the prescription to me, and I had to go to a women's clinic about 20 minutes away to pick the new box up each month. The whole point here is that, if you can and know the brand that works for you, get the whole year's supply before going...Bring the FILLED prescription with you. Also, keep in mind that while Japan DOES have BCP, the brands are different, and they will likely NOT have the one you are used to. For me, it was trial and error for the first 3-4 months, to see which of the Japanese pills worked for me with no side effects. I hope that helps you decide what to do.

I agree about the shampoo and conditioner. I'm a guy but I have long hair. J-shampoo & conditioner is designed for thick, coarse, black hair. My hair is fine and blond. Using J-shampoo, and conditioner, it always looks limp and dirty. If you don't mind the hassle of bringing it, I would.
