OK, let's say I have my independent FM3. I know I could teach privately but would that enable me to teach at some language schools sometimes also??
Kind of like a sub I guess. I'm wondering because Quick Learning told me I couldn't work for them unless I had my work visa. They told me to call them back after I have my visa. Not that one would need to work for a school periodically if they have enough private students, but if you come upon a dry spell and wanted to work for a couple of days or something like that, could you?? |

I think that if you had an FM3, you'd be able to work legitimately for language schools as well as having your own private students. It would depend on how the letter you write for Migracin when you apply for the FM3 is worded. Having a good immigration lawyer would be helpful here. |

The latest news is that the FM3 has been issued (so I'm finally working here legally) but that they're still hanging onto it at Migracin for reasons known only to the devious bureaucratic mind. . |

Probably; I think it would depend on the school. As long as they are willing to be your "client" and have you be their "independent contractor", there is no problem in terms of what the visa allows. I'm no expert, this is just my [un]educated guess.

Too bad you couldn't make it to the zoo today. Hanging out with "the gang" and gawking at the animals might've taken your mind off your job-hunting woes. |

Yes, this is how it works. Immigration told me. Some schools, however, aren't willing to do this as it means legally declaring taxes/hacienda will find out you work there. My current boss isn't too keen on the idea - can't imagine why - he then wanted me to thank him because he 'paid' my taxes last payday (paid his own taxes on a sum of money)!
I don't think QL will do it either as they are not keen on hiring foreigners unless they are here legally of their own accord. (They don't say this of course) |

An FM3 independente allows you all teaching options within that discipline, whether at a language school, private tutoring, university or prepatoria.
When I initially applied for my first FM3, the immigration official walking me through the process (this was in Merida, where half the people spoke English) was more than happy to get me on board with the independente program as it would have also enabled me to gain a position with a SEP school, (ie public school on the primary grade and junior high levels, as well as the preps part of the state university system) However when it came time to apply for such positions, SEP was not in the least helpful. |

Does anybody know whether or not with an independent FM3, you are entitled to health insurance if taking a position that would normally give those benefits, ie. working full-time at a private colegio? |

Yes, it is illegal to work without IMSS anywhere after 3 months. |

Is that true even if you are employed as an "independent contractor" (see notamiss's post)? |

I am led to believe that if you're on a 'provedor/supplier' type arrangement with a client/company then you're not entitled to IMSS. I have one such arrangement with a school and IMSS wasn't part of that deal. |
