|
|
I finally picked up my FM3 this morning (!!!) and can now proceed to the next step in normalizing my life in the D.F. I need to open a bank account here, mostly so my private students and other clients can easily deposit the money they owe me. I know that all banks are problematic (and problem-makers), but has anyone recently opened an account with one that didn't give them more than the expected hassles? In my immediate area, I have HSBC, Santander Serfin, Banamex, and Bancomer very nearby.
Thanks for your help. |

Congratulations!
I haven't encountered any substantial differences between Mexican banks in terms of problems or customer service. Maybe other members have different experiences. |

Stay away from Banamex. They are way too problematic. |

Anything in particular?
I've liked HSBC. Any problems I've had with them were resolved rapidly. They are also good for the long haul if you're looking at credit lines or mortgages. |

Banorte or IXE
They are a little smaller, but they have better service and much shorter lines. In fact, I almost never wait more than 5 minutes at either bank. Which of the larger banks can you say that about? |

My first account was with Santander, and my wife has used them for 16 years with no problems. My only complaint is that the ATMs dispense $500 bills (but you already have the solution for that! ) and the ATMs all seem to work very slowly, leaving you wondering whether you're gonna get your card back. Or maybe I've just been unlucky. Also there are fewer branches than some banks - but enough. Better than trying to find an IXE branch, where apparantely you need $20000 to open an account! |

I think I'll go with Santander Serfin. I've been using their ATMs with no problems to withdraw my US pension funds (and with no service charges!) in pesos and everything has gone fine. It's true that the ATMs pace of coughing out the bills and returning your bank card is a little slow, but I've figured it out and have trained myself not to get impatient when it takes a few seconds longer than I'd like for the bills and then my precious card to emerge from their respective slots.
Thanks for everyone's recommendations and warnings! |

BTW Banorte is the last Mexican owned commercial bank in the country. I thought IXE is Mexican, but now I'm not so sure.
Santander? Good luck, let us know how that goes! |

No, qu? As I mentioned in the other bank thread, I am privy to knowledge of a Santander machine that dispenses 20's, 50's and 100's. It's so great that I sometimes use it even though I don't have an account & have to pay the fee for using a different bank. |

I got sage advice from the retirees who hang out on-line at MexConnect.com. I learned that I could open an on-line account with Bank of America (using my parents' address as my own) and then have my Social Security checks directly deposited into it. BOA has arrangements with two banks that do business in Mexico (Scotia Bank and Santander Serfin) that allow you to withdraw money from their ATMs without incurring a service charge. They also give you a pretty good exchange rate, though these days anything over 10 pesos to the dollar is pretty good! |

Good for you!
Makes me wonder even more why my Canadian bank doesnt do that, even though they are the same one (Scotia)! Ugh....it should all be online, and connected. Period. |
