Hello. I live in Thailand. My mind is made up to come to Taichung and teach. However, I am put off by two factors:
Suggestions that schools are looking for persons with the North American accent, and the time to apply for a vacancy.
My two questions:
1 - Do I have a fair chance of teaching in Taichung, if (born British with the Brit accent v NAC)?
2 - Best time to apply for a teaching post, before arrival, or apply to a school when in Taichung?

A British accent is fine. Some schools prefer US accents, but not enough to worry about.

That�s an age old question. If you are feeling lucky then job hunt when you arrive, but understand that you might not find the job you want. Local job hunting costs money, provides no income and increases the chances of a costly visa run. This has led to many teachers taking jobs that nobody else wanted. However, the lure of landing a slightly better paid job keeps this option alive. Again, just understand that the search of more money can easily cost you greater overall losses in the end.
In my opinion, if you can find a job you like before you arrive that would be better. Look at local hunting as plan B.
Out of interest, why Taichung?

That is promising. I had found out through the sites' search function that in Taichung there are Aussies, Brits, S. Africans and Canadians to be found in Taichung city. Thank you for confirming my suspicions, and putting the false rumours to rest.

Yes. The best I can afford is to take time and search a suitable teacher post in the right school. No need to rush. Thank you LKJ for the honest and insightful opinions, thoughts, and comments.
Why Taichung? I believe that Taichung does not distinguish itself as being any different from the other "provinces' and pays an ''equal''wage, but the living costs are less than here, I am led to believe. Which offers all, the insightful truth into why I want to teach in Taiwan.

Believe it or not, I do not have a British accent? But born British.
I believe it is a mixture of Aussie, American, and South African.
I am in fact, willing to learn this new American business-accent.

My commonwealth-speaking friends say the American twang is contagious, but I find my English evolving into the british vocab myself. It just depends on what kind of material you teach and who your expat friends are. |

That is interesting and distressful and no doubt, advice I should heed.
I wonder if there is an equivalent of the BKK Stickman's website in TW?
As far as I know, there is no equivalent: http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/
