Hi everyone,

I have specialized in teaching children over the past 8 years in Japan and Spain and want to take my energy to Dubai. Are there many possibilities to teach children in private language schools there? Do many of the primary schools hire expatriate teachers? How does the pay and benefits of teaching children compare with that of teaching asults or at University? All your help is most appreciated.

Hi Lippy. There are loads of jobs to be had teaching in private English-medium schools throughout the UAE. Are you qualified to teaching k-12? What curriculum? What do you currently teach? Strictly EAL/EFL?

Hi mishmumkin,

Thanks for the reply. Re: qualifications, I did a Bachelors of Cmmerce and later did my Masters of TESOL but never finished the final 2 subjects as I was running my own successful school. I wrote my own curriculums, developed my own coursebooks, softeware and materials.

Is Dubai the kind of place that only hires on qualifications? I hired more than 10 teachers whilst I had my own school in Japan and the best teachers are rarely the ones with a long list of qualifications. They were the ones who could come down to the level of the children.

My question is this: Will schools only hire based on qualifications or do they prefer a talented, experienced and successful teacher? Looking forward to your reply.

In a nutshell, yes. The whole of the UAE is very much about the degree in hand. If you had the MA TESOL in hand I would say that many schools would hire you to teach or head up a the EAL side of things. Without the teaching qualification or the MA TESOL, though, you are looking at limited options. Less money, less options, dodgier employers. I would try and finish up that MA if you still can.
