Hi there, i have a good friend who has just been employed by a university and needs help getting her FM3, does anyone have a suggestion of someone or a firm to help her. she has a very high level of spanish and is married to a mexican, she wants to make sure it goes smoothly as she has heard there can be complications for married applicants....she asked me to ask on here....

Congrats on the CELTA!
Mo39 used someone recently, why not PM her? Personally though, I think with good Spanish she shouldn't have any problem and should spend the $4000+ in Suburbia |

| I'd be happy to pass on the name and contact information of my lawyer to anyone who pm's me. You can always go in for a first informative meeting with him and then decide after if you want to hire him or not. Though I speak Spanish well and have acquired a certain tolerance for wading through Mexican red tape (please excuse the mixed metaphor), I decided to go with a lawyer to avoid a bunch of trips to Migraci�n and because I was applying for an FM3 "independiente", and my credentials were a little "iffy" according to Migraci�n guidelines. |

| I've never used a lawyer for four years now albeit there were times when I made eight trips to finish the job. If she speaks Spanish and her husband is Mexican they and go to INM first and ask for the checklist and other information. |

I used a law firm to process my FM3. I had no marriage issues, but my Spanish was basic. Two fee quotes I had received were $6,900 and $5,500 (Mex), exclusive of the application fee and charges for the translation of documents.
I can provide the lawyer info if you PM me.
My Spanish still isn't great, but I'm going to try to do the renewal on my own.

My lawyer charged me $4000 MN for his services (which would have included any translation of documents needed) to which figure must be added the fees charged by MIgraci�n, which come to about $2000 MN. |

I thought I had everything together for the FM3...every document ready, translated etc...when I tried to apply for it they told me that I had to be -married- to a Mexican. I went through the part where they check and stamp all your documents to 'authenticate' them but then when I tried to go to the special FM3 line that is what I was told...Anyone else hear that??
I'd like to give it a second shot and I would prefer not to use a lawyer...my documents are all ready and I even made the first 'introductory' payment. But when they told me that I was at a loss. Any ideas??
This is immigration in D.F. by the way. |

I'm sorry to hear that they're giving you a hard time at the Big M in the DF. Of course, you don't have to be married to a Mexican to apply for an FM3, or I'd still be here on a tourist visa! When I had my first meeting with the lawyer who got me my FM3, he told me that when you go to turn in your documents, it will go to one of two offices: one will take care of things quickly, and the other will give you a hard time. Guess which office my lawyer has contacts with...  |

You have to be married to a Mexican?
Something's rotten at INM in DF.
When INM in Tuxtla Gutierrez tried to shake me down for a "mordida" because my cheap FM-3 booklet fell apart (destruction of Mexican government property), I told them ""con todo respecto yo conozco la ley y no soy turista"
They charged me $450 pesos for a new book and I went on my way.
Maybe you do need a lawyer in DF but make sure he or she is not on the take, too. |

I think this could be what happened to ch at Migraci�n in the DF. There may be a special line for those applying for an FM3 who are married to Mexicans, and he got into it by mistake.
The "introductory payment" CH mentioned is likely the fee you have to pay to change from tourist to "no inmigrante" status. You make this payment before you actually pay for the FM3. That is what I did with the guidance of my lawyer, who I can assure you is an honest professional. |
