I'm thinking about heading back to Mexico(DF) after stalling for a while...The time flies.
I've got the BS, Celta, and a couple years teaching experience in Mexico from 99-01, and in 04.
I know I've picked an ailing U.S. economy to make a change in....Couple of questions:
1)How is our economic slump effecting things down there in Mex? Is it hurting the esl industry in any profound way?
2) My plan is just to go, bring my resumes and such(already gotr apostilles), and find a job when I get there...Does anyone know of some places to stay in the DF area for a good $ while i look for a job?
Thanks,
JB |

It doesn't seem like the US slump has hit Mexico yet, though it will soon I'm sure. Others will disagree with me on this, but in the last slump earlier this decade, I found that while it changed the nature of some corporate spending on English training, it had no effect on individuals seeking classes. I think that the slump then increased competition for the good jobs in Mexico and that had people rushing to improve their English to get those dwindling good jobs. I would expect the same thing to happen should the fit hit the shan here again.
There are some inexpensive hostels in town where you could stay in a private room for a good price whilst job seeking. You could also easily find a furnished room for rent without having to sign on for a year. Check www.segundamano.com.mx under the section inmuebles>habitaciones. Since you need to search by region, check into delegaciones Benito Juarez, Miguel Hidalgo, and Cuauhtemoc (all fairly central). Some central colonias within those delegaciones are Del Valle, Roma, Condesa, Juarez, Narvarte, San Miguel Chapultepec, Polanco, Veronica Anzures, and Napoles.
PM me if you'd like a hostel contact for a private room. I can call some friends here for you quite easily. |

I think the biggest slump will be in those families receiving remittances from their relatives working in the US. These families usually couldn't afford English lessons anyway. |
