While in CR I lived paycheck to paycheck and was always on a very tight budget. Even if you work at an international school, you will not save much. One popular school is Country Day school.

I did learn spanish rather well and enjoyed my time.

If you are a western woman you will like it the way western men like Taiwan or Korea. Despite this, relationships are full of jealousy. Lot's of good look'n Romeos and Casanovas.

I do remeber when I arrived, I bought insurance and during the physical, it was explained that the country has one of the highest Hep B rates in the world.

For the five years that I was there, each was filled with news accounts of North American tourists smoking pot with locals then getting raped and sometimes murdered. You will also see ads in the classifieds with someone from another country looking for a lost loved one in CR.

The place to be? I don't know about that, it's still Latin America, but if anyplace is to be down there, I would have to say Brazil. Probably Costa Rica's time was in the 60's or 70's prior to the influx of drugs.

Well, Rub Ruchi is giving a very one-dimensional take. I don't have time to give you any kind of low-down, but it's far nicer here than Rub Ruchi wants you to believe. :) But yes, as you will quickly discover reading in the forum, it's not super-safe etc blah blah blah. *beep* that. It's a nice place to live, just take care not to paint a target on your chest.

I am a guy of 50, western and gay.

I wear either Cartier or Breitling on my wrist,

Is that stupid? Is it the wild-west?

I agree that Rub Ruchi is not giving the whole truth. I live in Heredia and I think its great! If you choose to wear things that would lead people to believe you have lots of money and things to steal, you might not be making the best choice. As with any other country, you need to be smart. Smoking pot with people you don't know, in any country, may lead to things you don't want. Make good choices, er on the side of caution and you should enjoy your time.
