Hi everyone, I'm a Canadian coming to Mexico City at the end of September on a one way ticket.

I was wondering if anyone knew about health insurance in Mexico City.

I called Blue Cross *(Canada) and they told me they would not insure me without a return ticket.

Does anyone have any information about purchasing health insurance on a tourist Visa with a Mexican company? I plan on finding a job and applying for my FM3 as quickly as possible, however the first 3 months will surely be on a tourist visa.

Any recommendations?

I've looked into buying a local health insurance policy but was told that I need to have my FM3 before I can sign up. I wouldn't worry about not having insurance for three months - unless you get hit by a bus, the cost of any medical care you might need should be quite affordable, especially as compared to what it would be NOB!

Here are some previous threads on the subject which may (or may not) be helpful:

Somthing to keep in mind, which MO alluded to, is that you really only need insurance to be prepared for the unlikely event of some health catastrophe.

It takes a bit of a mind jump for us Canadians to get used to it, but routine medical care is so reasonably priced that even with insurance you probably wouldn't want to bother making a claim on your insurance for a simple doctor's visit, since it can be had for about $100200 (pesos). And basic drugs (like antibiotics) are way cheaperno dispensing fee.

"Pay as you go" is a very popular plan here in Mexico. I must confess that's been my insurance plan since leaving Canada 8 years ago. We have been meaning to sign up for IMSS but there are always such long lines. Smile

I have the IMSS (Mexican Social Security Institute) medical insurance . It comes with having a job along with a FM-3, CURP, RFC, Hoja Rosa, etc.

If you are here for a short time don't worry.

In DF they will cover emergency medical care for tourists.

Also, Cruz Roja Mexicana hospitals are free.

Paying for medical care is very cheap. I just had a dental check-up and cleaning for $150 pesos (15 USD).

I have never had any reason to use the emergency medical services, knock on wood Exclamation

Thanks everyone, the advice here is always great and comes so quickly!
Hopefully I'll get the chance to meet some of you soon, I'll be in D.F. by the end of September!
