To rent a modest appartment and have enough to live reasonably well, what salary do you need to earn?More important how many firms pay enough or is it the usual story of not enough and you end-up subsidising yourself with your own savings etc!(P.S. I do have a few years experience and speak several languages but not Catalan or Spanish.I also teach adults business English or older teenagers but not children.)
Thanks. |

I have a friend there who rents a room in a shared appartment for around 450 euros per month and she says it varies according to the area and standard of the accom. etc.She also warned me that many parts of the city are very noisy and some of the older buildings have poor insulation etc.She reckons that you would need at least 1000 euros to find an acceptable, basic appartment, even away from the centre and the deposit etc. depends on the owner. With this in mind ,surely a minimum of 1500 euros salary would be needed? |

I would say that 1500 would be the minimum and that 2000 would be a better figure to aim for, but not sure if that's realistic given competition from every man and his dog teaching English there??
I don't think finding a flat would be that difficult, there are many listed here http://www.loquo.com/ce/housing/flats-for-rent-by-owner/300 for example with 750 seeming to be the lowest price and the median price around 850. Generally two months deposit seems to be expected. |

Yeah, Loquo is a good place to look -- lots of people find apartments there.
Unless you're going to share (around 450 a month is "normal"), you'd be thinking at least 850 a month for your own apartment, call that 1000 with bills (and add two months deposit to that...)
Given that you're probably not going to make much more than 1200-1500 in your average language school, you'll be looking to supplement your income with (more lucrative) private classes...
I reckon you'd want to be making about 1750 a month, more if you have an expensive lifestyle (eating out, going out a lot...)
Barcelona's is an expensive place to live...! |
